Chapter 23: The Sub-Level Route

Rain slicked the alleyway behind Vanguard Headquarters as Elias pried open a heavy steel utility grate set into the asphalt.

Steam rose from the dark cavern below, carrying the damp, metallic scent of city runoff and overheated electrical wiring.

"The main subterranean network connects directly to the server basement," Elias whispered, switching his flashlight to low-power red light. "If my old schematics are right, this tunnel runs under the main security plaza."

Riley climbed down the rusted iron ladder after him, pulling the heavy grate back into place overhead.

The underground access tunnel was narrow, packed with bundled fiber-optic conduits humming with high-voltage current. Every few meters, small optical sensors blinked in the shadows, monitoring the temperature and airflow of the server shafts.

"Hold on," Riley said, stopping cold. She pointed her handheld scanner down the passage. "Active laser trip-wires every ten paces. Vanguard upgraded their subterranean security after the Oakhaven incident."

Elias knelt beside a primary junction box, pulling his small multi-tool from his belt. "They're using light-phase detection. If the beam breaks for even a millisecond, the local sub-level goes into lockdown."

Riley produced a small aerosol canister from her pocket, spraying a fine mist of thermal dust into the dark air. Three bright crimson lines appeared immediately, crisscrossing the narrow corridor.

"Easy enough," Riley murmured, stepping over the lowest beam with practiced balance. "Just don't breathe too heavy."

Elias ducked beneath the upper laser, inching his pack through the narrow gap. Step by step, they picked their way through the trip-wire grid until they reached a heavy steel maintenance door bearing the Vanguard corporate seal.

Elias swiped his keycard. The reader chimed yellow, then blinked green.
