The afternoon sun finally broke through the coastal fog, casting a warm golden glow over the harbor.
Inside the back room of Riley’s shop, the air was thick with the smell of brewing coffee and soldering iron smoke. Elias sat at the workbench, nursing a hot mug while Riley monitored a series of encrypted news feeds on her personal offline monitor.
Every major news channel was reporting on the sudden raid at Blackwood Point. Federal agents were already seizing assets connected to Director Arthur Vance’s private security firm.
"They're calling it an unauthorized mass-surveillance operation," Riley said, turning the screen slightly toward Elias. "Arthur is in federal custody. The paper trail is unraveling fast."
Elias looked down at his reflection in the dark coffee. "He thought he was protecting the city."
"Control isn't protection," Riley replied firmly. "He built a cage and called it safety."
She tapped a key, bringing up an isolated fragment of code she had managed to extract before the lighthouse servers went black. A string of encrypted IP addresses scrolled across the corner of the display.
"What is that?" Elias asked, setting his mug down.
"A residual routing node," Riley said, her brows furrowing. "When we purged the main server, a secondary data stream automatically rerouted to an off-site backup server before the connection died."
Elias leaned closer. "Where was it sending the data?"
Riley ran a quick geo-tracer script. A map opened up, displaying a high-frequency signal node located far beyond Oakhaven’s city limits—deep in the dense forests of Apex Ridge.
"Arthur wasn't the top of the chain," Elias realized aloud, his stomach dropping. "He was just running the local node."
Riley looked at him, her eyes bright with determination. "Which means whoever holds the master server on Apex Ridge still has access to the encrypted archives."
"Then we have to finish what we started," Elias said.
