Chapter 5: Into the Wire

365 Words
Cold rain lashed against Elias’s face as he burst out of the water treatment plant. Behind him, heavy boots sloshed through the mud, accompanied by muffled curses and the sharp, beam of flashlights cutting through the dark trees. "Find him!" a harsh voice bellowed from the entrance. "He has the drive!" Elias didn't look back. He sprinted through the dense pine woods bordering the facility, the heavy USB drive clutched tightly in his right coat pocket like a lifeline. Roots tripped at his boots and low branches clawed at his jacket, but fear pushed him forward. He knew every alley and shortcut in Oakhaven. Instead of heading toward the main road where they could easily intercept him in a vehicle, he veered right toward the old railway cut—a steep, gravelly incline that led back into the residential district. His lungs burned as he crested the slope and dropped onto the abandoned train tracks. He stayed low, ducking into the dark shadows beneath the overhead bridge. Minutes passed. The sound of shouting faded in the distance, replaced only by the steady drum of rain against metal. He had lost them—for now. Elias leaned against the damp concrete pillar of the bridge to catch his breath. His hands were trembling, covered in dirt and grease from the broken junction box. He pulled out the stolen USB drive. The matte black casing felt heavy, surprisingly warm to the touch despite the freezing rain. They were willing to kill for what was on this drive. He knew he couldn't go back to his basement. If they had remotely accessed his home network, his shop was compromised, and they might already be waiting for him there. He needed a secure, isolated terminal—somewhere off the grid where he could plug this drive in without leaking his location. Elias remembered the old repair depot behind his uncle’s closed-down auto shop on 4th Street. It was offline, unmonitored, and still had a working power generator. Stepping out from beneath the bridge, Elias pulled his hood low over his eyes and vanished into the rain-slicked streets. He had survived the night, but the real fight was just beginning.
