The old auto repair shop smelled of engine oil, rust, and damp decay.
Elias pulled down the rusted metal garage door, locking it behind him before navigating through the dark workstation. He headed straight for the small office in the back, where a dust-covered desktop tower sat beneath a workbench.
He flipped the breaker on the wall, and the small gas generator outside hummed to life with a quiet vibration. The computer monitor flickered, casting a pale blue glow across Elias’s tired face.
He pulled the stolen USB drive from his pocket and held it for a second. This drive was completely off-grid—no Wi-Fi, no network connection. They couldn't trace him here.
He plugged the drive into the USB port.
The screen blinked, and a file directory automatically executed. Instead of standard audio or video files, hundreds of data streams filled the terminal, updating in real time.
Elias opened a command prompt, running a local decryption script to parse the incoming feed. As the raw code transformed into readable text, his blood ran cold.
It wasn't just radio signals.
The system was pulling live audio feeds from emergency service dispatchers, city traffic cameras, and localized mobile towers across the entire county. Hundreds of civilian names, locations, and timestamps were scrolling past every second.
Oakhaven wasn't being spied on by ordinary criminals. A high-level syndicate was monitoring every movement in the city, using the dark frequency to coordinate silent operations without leaving a digital footprint on official networks.
Then, a specific folder at the bottom of the directory caught his eye: SUBJECTS_OF_INTEREST.
Elias clicked the folder. A short list of names appeared.
At the very top of the list was his own name: ELIAS VANCE.
Right beside his name was a live status indicator marked TERMINATE UPON RECOVERY.
Before he could process the horror of what he was reading, the computer monitor glitched. The terminal window minimized itself, replaced by a dark screen with a single flashing cursor.
A message slowly typed itself out across the screen line by line:
“Location confirmed. Fourth Street Depot. Thank you for plugging us in, Elias.”
