Lines of blue code flooded the central terminal screen, cutting through the system's firewall like a scalpel.
*“OVERRIDE DETECTED. MASTER PURGE INITIATED.”*
Arthur scrambled to his feet, terror replacing his cold composure. "Stop it! Elias, if you shut the network down, the entire city's power grid and emergency dispatch will go dark!"
"Only for a few minutes," Elias replied, leaning over the console as the progress bar hit 80%. "Long enough for the real authorities to see what you built down here."
Below them, the hum of the massive server banks started to pitch higher and higher into a screeching whine. Cooling fans blew hot air into the tower as the drive force-erased the encrypted storage drives section by section.
Arthur lunged for the main power breaker on the wall, trying to cut the power before the purge completed.
Elias blocked him, grabbing his arm and forcing him back. "It's done, Arthur."
The terminal screen flashed a blinding bright white.
*“PURGE COMPLETE. ALL SURVEILLANCE LOGS BROADCAST TO REGIONAL FEDERAL SERVERS.”*
A second later, a massive surge echoed through the entire lighthouse. The room went pitch black as every server, monitor, and relay node blew its internal fuses. Down in the harbor, the streetlights and emergency towers flickered out one by one, plunging the harbor district into complete darkness.
The dark frequency was dead.
The distant wail of sirens began to rise through the morning air—not syndicate channels, but actual, real emergency vehicles responding to the sudden grid blackout.
Arthur slumped against the window frame, staring out at the dark city, his hands shaking. "You've ruined everything..."
"I saved us," Elias said quietly, pulling his phone out. For the first time in days, the signal icon restored itself to normal service.
Elias looked at his uncle one last time as heavy footfalls echoed up the spiral staircase—this time, official police units responding to the automated distress ping Elias had just sent out.
Elias stepped back into the shadows, his job finished.
