Chapter 1: The Goodbye She Never Expected**
The rain poured relentlessly over the city, blurring the lights outside the hospital. Amelia Carter sat on the edge of a worn plastic chair, clutching a folder of unpaid medical bills. Her fingers trembled as she stared at the doctor's final report.
"I'm sorry," the doctor had said only moments earlier. "Your mother's condition has worsened. She needs surgery immediately. Without it..."
He hadn't needed to finish the sentence.
Amelia knew exactly what he meant.
She glanced through the small window into the intensive care unit. Her mother lay unconscious, surrounded by machines that beeped steadily, each sound a painful reminder that time was running out.
Amelia had already sold everything she owned. Her small apartment, her jewelry, even the old piano her father had left behind before he died. Still, it wasn't enough.
She wiped away the tears threatening to fall.
"There has to be another way," she whispered.
Her phone vibrated.
The caller ID read **Daniel Brooks**.
A smile almost appeared on her face.
Daniel.
The man she'd loved for five years.
The man who had promised they would build a future together.
She answered immediately.
"Daniel?"
His voice sounded distant.
"Can we meet?"
"Of course. Is everything okay?"
There was a long silence.
"I'll explain when you get here."
An uneasy feeling settled in her chest.
---
An hour later, Amelia arrived at the small café where they had shared countless dates.
Daniel was already waiting.
He didn't stand to hug her.
He didn't smile.
Instead, he stared into his untouched cup of coffee.
"What's wrong?" Amelia asked, taking the seat opposite him.
Daniel finally looked up.
"I'm getting married."
The words hit her like a speeding train.
She blinked.
"What?"
"My parents arranged it."
She laughed nervously.
"Stop joking."
"I'm not."
Silence.
The café buzzed with conversation around them, but Amelia heard nothing.
Only the pounding of her own heartbeat.
"What about us?" she asked quietly.
Daniel lowered his eyes.
"My family is bankrupt."
She frowned.
"What does that have to do with anything?"
"The Morgan family offered to save our company."
Realization slowly dawned on her.
"They're buying your marriage."
Daniel nodded.
"If I marry their daughter, my family survives."
Amelia felt the air leave her lungs.
"So that's it?"
"I'm sorry."
She searched his face for some sign that he was fighting for them.
She found none.
"I loved you," she whispered.
"I know."
"No."
Tears filled her eyes.
"You *said* you loved me."
"I do."
"Then fight for us."
Daniel remained silent.
His silence hurt more than any words ever could.
After a long moment, Amelia slowly removed the silver ring he had given her on her birthday.
It wasn't an engagement ring.
Just a promise.
A promise that now meant nothing.
She placed it gently on the table.
"I hope," she said, forcing a faint smile through her tears, "that everything you gain is worth everything you're about to lose."
Without waiting for a reply, Amelia stood and walked away.
She didn't look back.
She couldn't.
Outside, the rain soaked her within seconds, but she welcomed it. It hid the tears streaming down her face.
As she crossed the street, her phone rang again.
It was the hospital.
She answered immediately.
"Miss Carter," the nurse said urgently. "Please come back as soon as possible. Your mother's condition has taken a turn for the worse."
Amelia froze.
Then she ran.
She had already lost the love of her life.
She couldn't bear to lose her mother too.
Little did she know, before dawn broke, fate would offer her **one last chance**—but at a price she never imagined.
