Chapter 18

904 Words
My feet dangled in the freezing cold water and even though it was January I somehow didn't feel cold. On the contrary. My body was glowing. This is where I sat when I first met Damon. It had already been five days since he had... 'left' me and unfortunately clone Elise had crawled back into her hole. A few tears ran down my cheeks. I missed him because while Tom was doing his best to cheer me up, I needed Damon. It was probably because he was my mate. Although, the 'probably' could also simply be deleted. I splashed my feet a little, and the few tears turned into a downright torrent. "Elise," a tentative voice behind me. I didn't turn around. Instead, I pulled my feet out of the water and slipped on my shoes. "I-I'm so terribly sorry." I gave a cold laugh, trying to quell the panic that was building. I was afraid. So scared, even though I wanted to turn around to hug Damon and forgive him. "You're a monster, Damon" the words were meant to sound strong and independent, but instead they slipped out of my mouth like butterflies. Delicate and weak. "That 'Tom' talked you into it, didn't he?" He almost spat out his name. I swallowed. Then I answered harshly, "No. You showed me that yourself!" I turned to him. He looked awful. His dark circles under his eyes were deep, his hair disheveled, and his cheeks sunken. "Elise, you have to listen to me. Tom is a hunter, he manipulates you because he wants to finish me off! He's the monster" I laughed scornfully. "Tom told me the truth. "So you would have believed me and not been scared if I told you I was a werewolf?" Damon looked up mockingly and took a step towards me. The tears were still streaming down my cheeks and I wish I could turn it off. He wanted to put his hand up to wipe it away from me, but I pulled back. "Don't touch me." Sobbing and blinded by fear, I took a few steps to the side. "Elise! Please!" He begged, but I backed away even further. " Y-you... you didn't want me anymore. You hurt me. And you are a monster. you don't feel anything for me You only love me because of that damn 'mate' thing!" He started to protest, but I cut him off again. "No, don't say anything. Don't destroy me any more!" You knew how broken I was, that my mother was in a asylum and that my father ran away, and yet you didn't care about my feelings! You probably didn't give a f**k! That and the fact that you're a werewolf pretty much proves you're a monster. And the worst thing is that I still love you." Shaking my head, I looked in his direction, then I ran away. He gave me a f**k. The rustling behind me made it clear that he was following me. "Go away!" I shrieked in panic and full of fear. But Damon didn't seem to think about it. "You promised me a date," he roared. I jerked to a halt. Out of breath, I brushed a strand of sweat-soaked strands of hair out of my hair. My heart screamed to turn and meet Damon's beautiful, crystal-clear blue eyes, but I knew I was doomed if I did that. I'd probably believe anything, forgive him anything, and I couldn't do that. "And you promised me you'd never hurt me willingly. I'd say we're even! " Damon growled behind me and I felt his hand on my shoulder. "I didn't hurt you on purpose. I figured the hunter was one of the regular kind, not one of those lab freaks who would kill you. Also, I couldn't intervene while Tom was around. He would have taken advantage of my moment of weakness. I had to tell you Firstly because the hunter was nearby and you would have been in even greater danger if they had known how much I love you and that I would die for you. And besides..." He rested his chin on my head and it felt too good to push him away. "My parents aren't too happy my mate is human...Werewolves are going through some crises these days , they think you're too weak. They think I should find a mate of my kind and you" I felt him swallow. " Forget you. But I couldn't! Never in my life could I or would I forget you." Something dripped onto my hair and I realized with horror that it was a tear. Now how should I please react to that? Damon seemed to have regained his composure, because he said with a firmer voice Voice: "That means I have a date open with you. I'll pick you up tomorrow at 6pm" I didn't answer. What should I say now? Maybe I was just shocked? Unfortunately I loved him too? That I could never forget him? That I was terrified of him? I could have said all of this without lying, but I couldn't do it to him. Not after what he just revealed to me. "And Elise?" I said nothing. What did he expect from me? "I love you. And I'm sorry!" I sobbed softly and he stroked my head soothingly. And then I ran away and he didn't run after me.
