And with these words he destroyed everything. My heart felt like a giant hammer was about to smash it, like someone had wrapped their hand around it and was crushing it unbearably. I looked down and took a step back as well.
How could he do this to me? Why, why had he made all these promises, given me so much time and attention, spied on me, and given me some stability in my otherwise quirky life, only to take them away and leave me even more of a wreck?
Damon stood still. He made no move to move away. So I turned and ran away.
The tears blocked my view, I ran blindly through the streets. On the way I didn't even really pay attention to where I was walking. A serious mistake. After a few minutes I tripped.
I twisted my face in pain, but the pain didn't come from my bleeding knee, but obviously from my bleeding heart. Great, I preferred my knee so much.
"Hey sweetheart, do you want me to distract you?" I snapped my head up and saw the face of an aging old man. His hair was long and shaggy, drool foamed at the corners of his mouth, and his clothes were tattered and dirty.
Uah! What a disgusting guy. He was standing maybe three steps away from me. Okay, now what was the probability of running away without him catching me?
Quite low. "W-what do you want from me?" I asked, my voice shaking at first, but gaining strength with the words.
The man gave me a dirty grin. Tears welled up in my eyes at this clear gesture. He took a step towards me. Just as quickly, I got to my feet and took a step back.
It went on like this until my back hit a cold wall. "Now that your little mate doesn't want you anymore, I can have fun with you."
When he said the word 'mate', I took him from a pedophile asshole to an enemy. Obviously, if so many people used the term mate in the context of soulmates, partners, and companions, then there was probably some truth to the werewolf theory. And if he was a werewolf up there...
I shuddered and looked around in a panic for an escape route. Nothing. I was in a dead end and had absolutely no chance against him.
Maybe I should just run up to him and punch him in the balls? Or poke my fingers in his eyes?
I had heard somewhere that it was very effective. Still, I wasn't too keen on trying it out.
"W-what do d-you mean dam-by that?" Without me wanting to, my voice trembled terribly. "Your little werewolf rejected you... I can do whatever I want with you." Again he grinned so terribly dirty.
"H-how do you know Damon w-left me?" It hurt to say those words, but I had to face the sad reality. After all, I had always known it.
Someone like Damon couldn't feel anything for someone like me! He had made that quite clear to me.
At the thought of it everything in me tightened. I felt broken, at the same time ashamed that he had managed to collapse my entire universe in just five sentences. But that should now be a minor matter, because the guy got closer to me.
"We're following you" he laughed and I got goosebumps. "We're following you every step of the way, but so far we haven't caught you once alone... Well" he took another step towards me. We were no more than half a meter apart. I was shaking with fear and panic.
"Once has to be the first time, right little?" His long, bony fingers curled around my neck and his nails dug into my flesh. I pressed as close as I could to the cool stone wall behind me.
"Oh, you don't have to be afraid of me." He smiled at me as if he were encouraging a small child. "I'm not going to do anything that will kill you for now. You know, because we still need you." Great. Now I was even less scared than before!
He released one hand from my neck and put it under my chin. "W-who are 'w-we'?" I stuttered out, panicking with fear. He looked at me beaming.
"How wonderful of you to ask! We are..." He didn't finish the sentence. Instead, he collapsed.
I shrieked loudly in shock. "Don't worry, I'll take care of you. He'll never hurt you again, okay?" Tom gave me a hug. Still shaking, I hugged him back.
Right now, I was just grateful to him for saving me from that madman. "And?" came Tom's soft voice. I looked at him questioningly. He smiled cautiously.
"Are you accepting my offer?" The moment I was about to answer, my phone vibrated. "Wait a minute," I instructed Tom and looked at the display.
Your hot guy : I'm warning you, don't go with him!
My eyes widened. My head shot from left to right. Was he monitoring me?
"Is something?" Tom looked at me worried. I shook my head quickly. "Everything's fine. Where do we want to talk? Would you like to come to my place?" He grinned.
"With pleasure. My car is in front of the café. Let's run over there." He held out his hand. God was uncomfortable! I pretended not to see her.
"Tom?" He smiled softly at me. "I don't know where to go..." "No problem, I do." As he walked, he kept checking his phone, but I didn't speak to him on it That wasn't my business.
