Without asking if I wanted it, he sat down at the table and put his hands on mine.
They were warm, but I didn't want to feel them. As I pulled mine away, he scowled at me.
"Listen Elise, I know you're mad at me right now, but it would be best if you listen to me because what I have to tell you is incredibly important. I don't want you to get hurt 'cause I love you so you gotta know the f*****g truth"
Tom looked at me hopefully while batting his eyes.
Was he hoping to look cute? If so, then he was pretty wrong. "Tom, please understand me... Maybe if you had come before I knew Damon... But like this... I know you seem to have strange feelings for me that I somehow don't understand because I I'm really nothing special, but my heart wants something else."
Maybe brushing him off would work better the gentle way. Not that Damon hit him too.
On the other hand, Damon obviously didn't want me anymore. Otherwise he wouldn't have been so mean to me today. Actually, it would only be fair to let him fidget a bit. Insofar as he wanted us to get along again.
I sighed and turned back to my counterpart. "Tom, I'm sure you're great, but please just forget me. There's no truth you have to tell me. I know everything I need to know, okay?"
Tom raised a single eyebrow. "I know things about Damon that will change your mind. But maybe you should get the full story first. Give me your phone and I'll save my number for you. If you've changed your mind, call me."
Normally I would protest and refuse, but in this case my damn curiosity won out. I hesitantly pulled my phone out of my pocket. Tom grinned and said just as I was about to unlock it:
"0205 I assume? Your birthday?" "Are you a stalker or what?" I hissed, but typed in those exact numbers.
After entering his number, he pushed back his chair and stood up. "There comes 'your dearest Damon'. I'd rather go. But do me a favor and ask him what mates are."
Tom grinned and the stunned look froze on my face. I narrowed my eyes carefully and counted to five to calm myself.
When I opened them again, Tom was gone, instead I saw Damon arguing with a waitress at the door.
"Damn, I have to go in there. Please, you have something good with me too" he tried desperately. The waitress grinned at him smugly.
"I'm sorry, but they're closed. I can show you a beautiful hotel though" she twirled her hair between her hands.
I stood up, mad with jealousy. Damon should slide down my f*****g hump.
Without ordering anything else, I turned to a waitress. "Sorry, is there a back exit here too?" Grumpily, she pointed in a direction on the other side of the café.
"After that you have to turn right once, then straight ahead and then you'll end up on the main road." She rubbed her red eyes, it looked like she had been crying all night.
"Men are all assholes," I smiled at her. A moment later I frowned. Encouraging words to strangers weren't really my thing. In general, words weren't really my thing.
she grinned. "The guy you're running away from is obviously one too?" I nodded. "A big i***t. Maybe we can meet up sometime and talk about big jerks," she suggested.
"Okay, if you give me your phone, I'll save my number for you"
♧
I carefully opened the metal door and took one last look over my shoulder.
Damon had pushed past the waitress, who was slouching along beside him instead, and was looking around the cafe.
I quickly left the building before he saw me. I quietly heard him calling my name while still searching, but I completely blocked it out. Let him look for me until his hair grows gray.
I sighed and followed the waitress' directions, realizing at the same time that we hadn't even exchanged names.
Well no matter. I couldn't go back to the café now anyway. "I got you!" I screeched loudly and clutched my heart the same moment I realized it was just Damon.
But wait! How did he know I was here? How did he even know I was in that cafe again? "Are you following me?" I hissed sharply. He sighed.
"Princess it..." I cut him off. "Don't call me that!" Hurt, he hunched over for a moment. Then he straightened up again, as if he didn't want me to notice how badly my words had just struck him.
"I'm fed up," he snapped. "All the time I do and do so that you'll forgive me for the smallest words and then you make a big drama out of it just because I don't have time for you for once?"
He exhaled loudly and took a step back from me as if he couldn't stand my closeness any longer. I stared at him in bewilderment.
"You f*****g asshole," I hissed at him. "Do you have any idea how I'm doing? I was overly picky at first, but it's only because I wasn't sure you meant it. You said you understood , but apparently you lied! Besides, it was you who betrayed me and spied on me against my wishes!
Just by the way, I would like to know how you know that! But if you know that about my mother, then you probably also know that all my kindergarten friends turned their backs on me when they found out that my mother was in a shack.
I was bullied in elementary school, in high school I was just invisible and did everything to ensure that nobody saw a reason to bully me! I always pretend I don't care, even in my mind I'm pretending, but the truth is I know exactly how much this is eating away at me and destroying me!
I bet you've had it terribly easy in life so far! How not, with such a great look, such an incredibly great charisma? But I'm slowly getting enough. I'm fed up, what was that about earlier with the waitress? And why does Leila hate me?
Where please is it fair that you keep so many secrets from me, but at the same time know everything about me? Don't play with my feelings, just be honest! If you don't feel like me, then say so, because anything else would destroy me!"
To be honest, I had no idea where this outburst was coming from, but it felt good to get rid of it all. Damon, on the other hand, didn't answer and moved a few inches away from me again.
"Maybe you are right. I should tell you the truth And that's that I was just playing with you. Did you really think I would feel something for someone like YOU? How naive can you be?"
