The low lighting of the bar flickered in warm amber hues, catching the sharp line of Malrick's jaw as he leaned in. His gaze fixed onto Seren with a quiet intensity, eyes unreadable, yet brimming with something dark beneath the surface. She could feel it, like a storm hiding just under calm waters. His hand remained beneath hers, but the stillness of his touch had changed. He wasn't shaking anymore. He was... focused.
"You know, I uh..." he murmured, staring deeply into her eyes now, as if trying to peel back her soul layer by layer. His voice dropped an octave, lower, quieter, but sharper at the edges. His tone was calm, calculated. Strange. "I tend to be a soft-spoken man. I'm not really aggressive. Or... rude. Per se. I like to, uh... be charming. I like to care for people." His lips twitched into a small, odd smile. It didn't meet his eyes.
"But sometimes..." he continued, voice thinning into something disturbingly amused. His tone turned glassy, like the calm that precedes a violent crash. "...Sometimes life gets a little too hard for me. And I need an outlet. A release. A way to let loose."
Seren shifted slightly, sensing something wrong in the way his voice had begun to warp. There was something behind those words, something unhinged. She opened her mouth, gently trying to cut in. "That's really tough, Malrick. I—"
Suddenly, the air cracked like a whip. "Shut the f**k up," he said, soft but razor-sharp. "Just shut up. JUST SHUT UP."
His voice hadn't risen in volume, but the venom in his tone made her flinch as if he'd screamed. The quiet fury coiled in those few words, measured, quiet, deliberate, was more terrifying than any outburst.
He didn't move. He didn't raise his voice again. But the presence he gave off was suffocating. His smile was gone. "Sometimes," he continued, his voice still eerily calm, "sometimes I feel like I'm being pulled apart by the seams. And if I'm being honest with you..."
His eyes were fixed on her, like a hawk watching prey. Seren's chest tightened. She didn't know whether to stay or get up and leave.
Then, suddenly...
"Hey!" Delaney's voice chirped behind them, completely unaware. Seren startled slightly, and Malrick blinked, his expression shattering like glass in slow motion. The darkness in his eyes drained away, and in the blink of an eye, the calm mask was back in place. His shoulders relaxed. His mouth softened into a small, polite smile.
Delaney walked in, giggling beside Rowan as they approached the table. Rowan looked slightly flushed, clearly winded from rushing. He was still in his office clothes, his tie loosened. Delaney looked effortless, as if this were a casual group hangout and not a hijacked date.
"Sorry we're late," Rowan said, slightly out of breath. "Work ran longer than expected. Malrick had us doing some pretty heavy stuff, huh?" He laughed. Delaney joined him with a cheerful, almost performative grin, sliding into the booth beside Seren like nothing was out of place.
Seren's heart dropped as she took in the scene. She looked at Rowan, then at Delaney. Her disappointment was hidden behind a polite smile. "It's okay," Seren said. "You're here now." She didn't mention that it was supposed to be just the two of them. She didn't bring up how long she'd waited. And she definitely didn't mention the deeply disturbing conversation Malrick had pulled her into before they arrived.
Rowan sat beside Delaney across from Seren and Malrick. The space grew lighter, more casual. Laughter, small talk, clinking glasses. Delaney nudged Rowan and made a joke about office coffee. Rowan laughed. Seren forced herself to smile. Only Malrick, sitting silently now beside her, didn't join in the laughter. He simply smiled softly, his gaze distant, serene. As if the last ten minutes had never happened.
But Seren remembered. She could still hear the echo of his low, chilling voice in her mind. "Just shut up. JUST SHUT UP." She glanced at Malrick. His expression was gentle. Relaxed.
Like a mask carefully placed back on a fractured face.
