New Beginnings
Seren adjusted the collar of her pale blue blouse, smoothing out the fabric before stepping into the glass-paneled office of Velvore Foods. The walls gleamed in the morning light, a stark contrast to the nervous butterflies in her stomach. This was her first real job, her first big step into a future she had only ever imagined in broad strokes.
"You're going to be amazing," Rowan whispered as he brushed past her, heading to his own desk just across the hall. Her fiancé looked effortlessly sharp in his tailored jacket and calm demeanor. He had worked at Velvore for over two years now, and when the marketing department had an opening, he'd recommended Seren without hesitation. Seren took a deep breath and stepped inside.
Malrick was already there, seated at his minimalist desk. He looked up, his pale blond hair tousled just slightly, as though he'd been running his hand through it, again. His voice was low and polite when he greeted her.
"Seren, welcome. I... I hope your first day goes smoothly. If you need anything, I—I mean anything work-related, I'm here."
His words came out haltingly, as if he was always half-apologizing for taking up space. He smiled faintly, and Seren smiled back, already warmed by his quiet kindness.
She had only been at Velvore for a week, but already the place was beginning to feel like a second home. The clean, modern office. The low hum of computers. The distant clatter of coffee cups. And of course, Delaney.
Delaney was a whirl of energy, sweeping into the office like a gust of fresh air every morning. Her cropped brown hair bounced with every step, and today she was wearing a pink dress.
"Seren!" Delaney grinned, sliding into the break room beside her. "I brought you a muffin. Blueberry. You're welcome."
"You're the best," Seren beamed, accepting the offering. "How do you look this cute every day? I feel like a pantsuit robot."
"You are a robot, but like... the fashionable kind," Delaney quipped, poking her in the side.
Lunch breaks were often the highlight of Seren's day. Sitting by the window with Rowan and Delaney, watching the city bustle below, sharing ideas about pitches and projects. Sometimes Malrick would walk by, glancing at them as though he wanted to join but wasn't sure how to ask.
Seren had picked up on his quiet longing, he wasn't like his father, the assertive and occasionally intimidating owner of Velvore. Malrick had inherited the title of CEO, but not the confidence that came with it. Still, he tried. And that counted for something.
One afternoon, after a team meeting where Seren had given a presentation on a new snack campaign, Malrick had stopped by her desk. "You... you did well today," he said, clasping his hands tightly in front of him. "Your ideas are, are fresh. I think my father would've liked that one, too."
Seren smiled, flattered. "Thank you, Malrick. That means a lot."
He nodded once, then paused. "Would it be... strange if I invited you and Rowan to dinner? My treat. I'd like to get to know you both better."
"Not strange at all," she replied, sincerely. "We'd love to."
And in that moment, as Malrick nodded and walked away, his voice still low, still reserved, but just a touch steadier, Seren felt something shift. She wasn't just an employee anymore. She was becoming a part of something. A part of Velvore. A part of something new.
