The reunion had grown louder as the evening wore on, laughter echoing off the walls, glasses clinking, memories being relived by people who had chosen who to remember and who to forget. Seren entered the hallway, the brief spark of joy from her conversation with Jude still flickering in her chest. For a moment, she felt seen, recognized not for her mistakes or who others assumed she was, but for who she used to be before everything became complicated.
Inside the gym hall, Delaney caught sight of Seren and Jude walking in together. Her eyes narrowed slightly, but her lips curled into that practiced smile she wore like perfume, familiar, sweet, and sharp if you got too close. "Oh my God," she said lightly to the cluster of former classmates surrounding her. "Seren really brought Jude? That's bold, especially with her whole fiancé thing. She's already marrying the guy she stole from me... what's she doing with my old crush now?" Her tone was drenched in sugar, but the implication was salt. The women around her perked up.
"She's with Rowan, right?" one asked.
Delaney nodded solemnly. "Yeah... it's just messy. But I don't hold anything against her." The tone was noble on the surface, but the words were grenades. The girls murmured among themselves, judging eyes drifting to Seren as she chatted with Jude across the room. Whispers floated in like smoke: "She's always copying Delaney," "Poor Delaney," "That girl just can't help herself, can she?"
A few minutes later, Seren excused herself and headed to the restroom, needing a moment alone. Her heels clicked quietly across the tile as she entered, emptying her breath as she stepped into the quiet sanctuary of the bathroom. She didn't expect anyone to be in there already, but as she stepped closer to the sink, she heard voices behind the door of the lounge area just off to the side.
"I just feel bad for Delaney," one girl was saying. "Seren has always been kind of... intense, you know?"
Another voice chimed in, lower and sympathetic. "Yeah, like, she always had to one-up Delaney. Even back in school. And now, stealing her ex and showing up here with Jude of all people? It's like she can't stop."
Seren froze, hand halfway to the faucet. Her heartbeat was a quiet thunder in her chest. She backed away slowly, retreating into a stall and locking the door behind her. She sat down on the closed lid, trying to breathe.
The voices continued, light and casual, as though they weren't tearing at the softest parts of someone's soul just meters away. "She always seemed like she was trying too hard to fit in," one said. "It's like... painful to watch." "And Delaney's just so gracious about it. I don't know how she does it. If it were me, I'd be furious." The door creaked open as the girls left, laughter trailing off as the bathroom fell silent again. Seren stared at the floor of the stall. Her vision blurred, not from rage or shame exactly, but from the weight of familiarity. She had spent so much of her life trying to escape the versions of herself people insisted were real. She thought she'd left that behind.
A tear slipped down her cheek before she could stop it. She wiped it away quickly, then another. But she didn't sob. She didn't break down. She just sat there, eyes closed, trying to remember her own voice beneath the ones that had been pushed into her ears like poison.
Maybe she had made mistakes. Maybe she hadn't always been the best at defending herself, or seeing who was truly on her side. But she was tired of letting someone else, anyone else, write her story for her.
After a few minutes, Seren stood and exited the stall. She looked at herself in the mirror. Her makeup had smudged slightly under her eyes, but her gaze was clear. Not strong, not broken, just real. She fixed her face quietly, tied her hair back again, and walked out of the bathroom.
