Spilled Intentions

1060 Words
The morning at Velvore Foods started like any other: the soft whir of printers, light tapping of keyboards, and the scent of brewed coffee weaving through the air like a silent stimulant. Delaney entered the office with a confident strut and a tray of takeaway coffees balanced carefully in her hands. She had taken it upon herself to be the "sweet office girl" today, a self-appointed morale booster, armed with caffeine and charm. Her outfit was carefully curated: a soft blush pink cardigan, high-waisted plaid skirt, and little heeled boots that clicked playfully across the tiles. "Coffee delivery!" she sang, flashing her teeth in a wide grin. The team lit up. Everyone loved free coffee, and Delaney's bright energy made the delivery feel like a treat rather than a distraction. She passed each one out with a bubbly, practiced kindness, adding a wink here, a cheerful joke there. Malrick's desk was her last stop. She approached slowly, adjusting her expression into something softer, more coy. Malrick didn't usually accept small talk or gestures easily, but that didn't mean Delaney didn't like the challenge. Especially with someone who carried a quiet, confusing power like him. There was something about him, not attractive, necessarily, but magnetic in his unreadable stillness. "Morning, Mr. Malrick," she said playfully, holding out his cup. "I got your favorite, black, no sugar. You strike me as the type." Malrick looked up from his screen. His pale lashes flickered once over her, unreadable as always. "Thank you," he said quietly, reaching for the cup. And that's when it happened. Delaney's ankle buckled, maybe a rug shifted beneath her boot, maybe her balance was off, whatever the cause, her hand jolted forward, and the full cup of scalding black coffee tipped straight over onto his desk. The sound of the splash was oddly loud. Brown liquid spread across the glass surface, soaking documents and dripping onto the floor. Malrick's entire desk looked like it had been attacked. Delaney's mouth fell open in horror. "Oh my God — I—I'm so sorry!" She dropped the tray on a nearby chair and grabbed tissues from the counter, dabbing quickly at the papers, her heart racing. Malrick stood slowly. His expression was still unreadable, but now there was a tension in his jaw. Delaney turned the dial up on her charm, trying not to panic. "That totally wasn't supposed to happen. I guess I was too eager to impress," she said, forcing a laugh. "You know how mornings are, high heels and high hopes." Malrick didn't say anything. "I really didn't mean to—" "Delaney," he interrupted, his voice low and even, "come with me." She blinked. "What?" He didn't repeat himself. He simply placed a hand around her wrist, firm but not rough, and turned toward his other office. Her breath caught. This was a first. As they walked, she glanced nervously at a few coworkers who quickly averted their eyes. Her heels clicked fast behind him. The coffee incident had already created a mini spectacle, her being pulled aside made it worse. Malrick's Office. He shut the door behind them, and the air changed. Malrick didn't let go of her wrist right away. He looked down at her, his tall frame partially blocking the light from the window. His hand felt warm and firm against her skin. "I said I'm sorry," Delaney started, smiling in a way she hoped was disarming. "It was a total accident, Malrick. I didn't mean to mess up your day." Still, he said nothing. "And... maybe I could take you out to dinner or something?" she offered, dropping her voice to a teasing pitch. "A peace offering. We could both use a little fun." His eyes didn't blink. Delaney shifted. The silence unnerved her. "You're always so serious," she tried again, lighthearted but trembling just slightly. "Let me buy you a drink. Or two." Still nothing. Then he moved. Malrick stepped forward, not enough to touch her, but enough to make her feel cornered. His fingers tightened just a little around her wrist. "Are you trying to flirt with me?" he asked finally. Delaney faltered. "Maybe a little," she whispered, trying to keep her voice flirty, but her nerves were rising. He leaned down slightly, voice still soft, but darker than before. "Don't." Her breath hitched. "I—" "Don't play games with me, Delaney," Malrick said, still calm, but there was a sharp undertone now, a blade tucked into silk. "You think I'm going to forget everything you say behind my back just because you spill a drink and flash a smile?" Her eyes widened. "I don't say things—" "You talk," he cut in. "All the time. About everyone. You don't even know what's real, do you?" Delaney froze. Then, to save face, to get control back, she tried once more. "Well maybe I don't actually like you, anyway," she snapped, voice rising. "Maybe I was just being nice." He stared at her a beat longer, then said with surgical calmness: "Who said I liked you, biggie? Don't put your thoughts out there when they're not asked for." The room went silent. Her breath shook. He let go of her wrist. Delaney jerked her hand away like she'd been burned, eyes stinging with a mix of shame and fury. Her face flushed, and she stood still for a second, as if caught in place, before grabbing the doorknob and storming out without a word. Back in the Office The air in the hallway felt colder. People glanced up from their desks, but quickly looked back down. Delaney's walk back to her own desk felt like a walk of shame, not because of the coffee, but because of what had happened behind that closed door. She tried to shake it off. Smiled too wide. Giggled when she passed a coworker, trying to reclaim her place. But something had changed. Inside Malrick's Office Malrick stayed where he was. The moment she left, his shoulders slumped. He reached up and ran a hand through his pale blond hair, exhaling a long, tired breath. For all the control he wielded with his words, they drained something from him too. Especially when he had to use them like that. He stood still in the quiet. As if waiting for something that wasn't going to come.
