A Date?

824 Words
Seren had spent most of her time at work now, Malrick assigned her so much work. In a way Seren was glad she didn't have pets, at this rate she wouldn't be able to properly care for them. Malrick stepped over to her desk, he loomed over her work. He looked satisfied. "Truth is, compared to Rowan and Delancey combined. You single handedly have done ten times the work." Malrick's tone seemed calculating. "Thanks... " she spoke awkwardly, it's hard to accept a compliment which was given from trampling others. Malrick handed her a shopping bag. "I had someone pick this up just now, I'm taking you somewhere. A reward for your honest work." Malrick had stepped away back to his office. Seren looked through the bag, a nice black dress, gold jewelry, matching heels... this was a complete outfit and for what? what is the reward that he had to buy all this? Malrick seemed to be lingering in his office, she could tell... he was waiting for her to put it on. Seren stood up and stepped into the breakroom, entering the women's only restroom. She pulled out the pieces one by one from the bag, gently balancing them on the edge of the sink. It was Sunday today, a day where she used to relax and lay in bed all day after school. Nowadays she spends her time at work in the office, she could have sworn her schedule didn't use to be so packed like this. Seren begun changing into the dress, carefully putting on the jewelry pieces. She stared at herself in the mirror. She had eye bags, when did it get this bad? She placed her old clothes in the shopping bag and went back to the office. It was late at night, nobody else is here but Malrick. It had always been like that for a while. Seren always worked extra shifts. Rent wasn't getting any better in the city. She would rather ask that he keep care of her rent for her instead of buying all these lavish things, but she felt that directly asking for something... was over doing it. Rather than receiving things out of the blue unasked for. "You look good, you look like a billion dollars." He spoke directly. His expression unreadable. "Maybe because I'm probably wearing a billion dollars." She slightly chuckled but he didn't laugh with her. "Let's go, your reward." He suddenly grabbed her wrist and pulled her towards the elevator. She was flattered, he was a little weird, but he kept cared of her. He had done so much more that Rowan had ever done for her... Probably because Malrick was rich and had the money to make anything happen. Seren loved Rowan, but his attention went to Delancey... it didn't feel like she was engaged to Rowan anymore, it felt like she was only third wheeling Rowan and Delancey on dates where it was only supposed to be her and Rowan. Seren stood next to Malrick, his hand still holding onto her wrist. She didn't want to point it out. Their workspace was on the higher floors, so the elevator took a little to make it all the way to the very bottom at the private parking garage. "What's the surprise?" She looked up at him, just asking lightly. He slightly chuckled, looking down at her. "You'll see." "DING!" the elevator chimed when they reached the bottom, Malrick continued to pull her toward his car, he finally let go when he opened the passenger seat for her. "Thanks... " she muttered as she slid into the car. He gently closed the car door before sliding into the driver's seat. She pondered on what the reward could be? she's dressed nicely, could it be a super nice restaurant... that was the only thing she could think of at the moment. As the car drove through the night, the twinkling lights of buildings were putting her to sleep. She'd always been sleepy, surviving on coffee to force herself to get work done. She didn't realize she had already fallen asleep. Her head fell over and landed on Malrick's shoulder as he drove, he glanced over with a sly smirk. She just looked so tired... he had never seen her so peaceful, so vulnerable like this. He had purposely given her so much work, added more shift days to her schedule. He wanted her to be within reach at all times. He liked it when she was tired and sleepy. The way she slurred her words, stuttered sometimes. Watching her trying so hard to focus and having an excuse to bring her more coffee. Malrick always thought she was pretty, since the very beginning he had accepted to hire her in his department. He thought about wedging a fork between her engagement himself... but with Delancey around, she did all the work for him... it was just a waiting game.
