Chapter 1 Valentine's Betrayal, Love Shattered
It was February 14th. Valentine’s Day.
The city glimmered under a sea of neon lights and street lamps, casting reflections on the rain-slicked roads. A fine drizzle fell from the night sky, creating a soft mist that enveloped the quiet streets. Walking briskly, a slim woman in a white dress clutched a small umbrella, her pale face glowing faintly in the soft light.
Lila Montrose smiled to herself as she glanced at the cake she carried in her other hand. Despite the cold rain and the long day, she felt warm inside. It was her three-year anniversary with her first love, Adrian. They had faced so much together. Sure, he had said he couldn’t celebrate with her because of work, but she didn’t mind. Lila had spent the entire afternoon carefully baking the cake, eager to surprise him.
She hurried through the gates of Yajun Residence, a familiar place she had come to think of as home. The door to Adrian’s apartment was unlocked-odd, but she dismissed it. Once inside, she placed the cake gently on the coffee table and took a step back to admire it. Her heart swelled with anticipation.
It was going to be perfect. She imagined his surprised face, how he would sweep her into his arms and tell her how much he missed her. Lila smiled, slipping off her shoes as she prepared to sneak into his bedroom. She wanted to make this night unforgettable.
But then she froze.
A soft, unmistakable sound drifted through the hallway-the low, breathy gasps of a woman. Lila’s smile faded instantly. Her entire body tensed as the sounds grew louder, more intimate. A man’s groan followed, deep and unmistakable.
Her heart dropped. No. It couldn’t be.
Shaking, Lila stepped forward, her hand trembling on the door handle. She didn’t want to believe it. Not Adrian. Not the man who had shared three years of love with her, through the laughter and the tears. But the voices coming from behind the door were undeniable.
“You need to break up with her soon,” a sultry female voice purred.
“Soon, baby. I promise,” Adrian's voice followed, thick with desire. “Once everything’s in place, I’ll get rid of her.”
Lila’s breath caught in her throat. It felt like the air had been sprayed out of her lungs. The cake-the anniversary-everything suddenly seemed so insignificant, so foolish.
“I don’t know why you haven’t done it already,” the woman cooed, her voice playful, laced with jealousy. “Don’t tell me you still care about her.”
“Please. She means nothing to me,” Adrian’s voice was sharp, dismissive. “She’s a bore. Always playing the saint. I’m sick of it. You’re the one I want.”
Lila stood frozen in place, her hand still gripping the handle. Her mind whirled, trying to process the cruel words cutting through the air like knives. She felt the blood drain from her face as a suffocating sense of betrayal settled deep within her chest. Three years of trust, shattered in a matter of seconds.
She could no longer stand outside, waiting. Steeling herself, she turned the knob.
The door swung open.
The sight hit her like a punch to the stomach. Adrian was sprawled across the bed, half-naked, with another woman-someone Lila recognized all too well. Elias, her so-called friend, was straddling him, her eyes gleaming with satisfaction as they both turned to face her.
Time seemed to stand still. The room was charged with tension, and yet, neither of them seemed particularly shocked or remorseful. Elias slid off Adrian languidly, a smug smile creeping onto her lips, as though she had been expecting this moment.
“Well, looks like you’re home early,” Adrian muttered, his voice suddenly cold, devoid of the affection he once held for her.
Lila swallowed hard, forcing back the tears burning at the corners of her eyes. “What is this?” Her voice shook, though she tried to keep it steady. “How long has this been going on?”
Adrian stood up, his expression hardening into something unrecognizable. “It doesn’t matter,” he said, his voice cruelly calm. “You should leave, Lila. This… isn’t for you.”
The casual dismissal cut deeper than any betrayal could. He looked at her like she was nothing, as though the years they had shared meant less than the fleeting pleasure of the moment.
“You... used me,” Lila whispered, her voice breaking.
Elias laughed softly, as if amused by the whole situation. “Oh, sweetheart, you really thought he’d stay with you forever? Poor thing.”
Lila’s hands clenched into fists. She wanted to scream, to hit them both, to make them feel just a fraction of the pain she was feeling, but instead, she took a deep breath. She wouldn’t give them the satisfaction of seeing her break.
Adrian’s lips curled into a sneer. “Just leave, Lila. It’s over.”
She stood there for a long moment, staring at the man she thought she knew, at the life she thought she had. Finally, she exhaled, her heart heavy with the weight of betrayal.
“Fine,” she said, her voice calm, but laced with icy determination. “But don’t think you’ll get away with this. One day, you’ll regret it.”
Without another word, she turned and walked out of the apartment, leaving behind the cake, the memories, and the shattered pieces of her heart.
