“It’s empty.” Rhett said, frowning. “The doorway could be laced with magic.” I grunted, thinking of plenty smart remarks I could spit out. Pepper rushed forward, nearly going past me, through the open doors. I stuck my arms out, grabbing her. “Stop!” I snarled. She pulled back, looking at the room with wild eyes. “Gran? Where is she? She said she’d be here, she can’t be missing!” She shouted, ripping her arm out of mine. Before I could stop her, she went into the room. “Damn it, Pepper, I said stop! It isn’t safe!” I rushed behind her, knowing the entrance to the door could be laced with magic. My gut sank as I passed through the wide-open doors. What we’d seen had been a glamour, a false image. What was behind the doors was so much worse. Tables and chairs were strewn everywhere.
