Prologue
Footsteps would slam into the concrete as hunters pursued the family of three through the night . A twelve year old Marcus being carried by his father while his mother ran alongside them. They would turn a corner and hide in the shadow of a porch, the hunters running past. Marcus would try to speak but his mother would cover his mouth. They would wait for the footsteps to fade before they started running again. Realizing that there was too many hunters and they’ve had too many close calls this night alone, they duck into an alley way. Hiding Marcus behind a dumpster. Marcus’s father would speak. “No matter what, you must survive. Understand?” Marcus would nod, having too many scares this one night. Marcus’s father smiles. “When the sun rises try to find that nice lady that helped us. She’ll help you. Okay? Remember that your mom and dad loves you. Okay?” Marcus would start crying “please don’t leave me.” Marcus’s mother would hold him close to her, rubbing his back to sooth him. “It’ll be okay. Just stay here and be quiet. You can do that for us right? You can do that for mommy?” Marcus would nod. “Good. Now go back into your hiding space.” Marcus would crawl back behind the dumpster, watching his parents leave. A few minutes later he would hear gunshots nearby but would stay quiet, holding back his tears, knowing that his parents have said goodbye for the last time.
