Chapter One "My father's bride"
Bode worked endlessly on his laptop, he flexed his long digits which were tired from working since 5am. When he finished, he pushed his six inches one body out of the seat and stretched, letting out a warm yawn. He didn't clear his shoe out of the way last night and he slept in his work clothes, after spooning a bowl of half-done noodles for dinner. He picked one leg of his shoe which lay helplessly on his mini fridge and the other which lay on the floor and placed them on his scattered shoe rack, his sock was lurking out from underneath his bed and he picked it up. bringing it to his nose, he immediately regretted his actions, it stunk, and he immediately dumped it in the souvenir bag which served as his laundry.
In the middle of picking up stuffs and making his room look like that of a sane man, his phone rang and he bolted to it. His heart did a litte acrobatics when he saw "Baami" with a purple devil emoji as the caller ID. He rolled his eyes and picked up
"Hello" his Dad, only 65, said in his perfect Yoruba accent "Hello Baami, good morning sir" Bode responded, pausing to check the clock, that way he could avoid having insults for breakfast.
He listened and picked at the pimple on his forehead to while away time, biting his lips impatiently. His father asked him to come to the main house.
He was an only child that came after his parents wanted a child for a very long time and one would think his parents would treat him like an egg, but it wasn't exactly so for Bode.
His dad was very hard on him growing up, and he grew up doing whatever his father wanted in the best way he could, he could do anything to have his father pat him on the back, grin from ear to hear and say "Well done son, I'm proud of you" Even now, that he was 25 and employed, he still killed himself to please his Dad who didn't let him so much out of sight.
"Get up son" his dad said straighten his medium sized body and rubbing his belly, bode was halfway up when he sighted his mom and went back down like the "omoluabi" he was.
After discussing politics and getting high on too much wine, his father remembered, the real reason he had been summoned
"Mr Ajayi told me about the presentation on Monday" he voiced, "yessir!" He responded, keeping his shaky hands under the table.
"you had better do well, Omo Olusegun nie, we don't fail here" Another chill ran Through him when he heard this and the urge to please his dad once again coursed through him.
That afternoon, he ate his iyan in silence, and Everytime his father spoke at the table, he choked on his food.
.......................................
Her skin is like milk, and her brown eyes shines like hot coal, she stands 5'9 with confidence.
Her name is Bella.
Her phone rang and she picked, examining herself in the mirror at intervals, it was her mom
"Hey mom" she called in Igbo, her native tongue.
"Oma lisha" Her mom worshipped her as she was named after a goddess and she smiled
"Thank you mom, I just wanted you to know that Fid-Tech called me and I got the job" she announced and her mom was even prouder. It wasn't such a surprise because, she was a chip off the old block. Just like her mom, she was a resilient, confident and smart tech guru, something she had been doing since she was four.
"I'm on my way to church now mom, I'll be resuming tomorrow" she said and hung up.
She added a little gloss to her lip and left for her car, which was black like her outfit.
She sighted chigozie, the son of her parish priest's brother's son who she almost got engaged to sometime last year, the story of how they broke up, is a drama for another day, her heart thudded at the sight of him. She grabbed her rosary immediately and sang along with the Eucharistic hymns, she didn't want to be distracted.
....................
As he dressed up that morning, Bode added every dose of drama, with brymo's afeedu faana blasting out of his stereo, he was ready to take over the world. He spooned the last of his cereal into his mouth, chewed on some anxiety pills and pain killers and gulped it down with a glass of water,
"you are gonna kill this okay?" He said tugging at his tie, and straightening his blazer before walking to the car, which he borrowed from his Dad, after several warning of where to touch and where not to. He rolled his eyes after remembering how much trouble he would be in if he doesn't kill the contract, but remembering his mother's prayers that day, he felt more hopeful.
He joined the express, playing and singing along to some music from the car stereo.
He walked into the tall skyscraper that housed Fid-Tech, he got into the elevator with two other men after grabbing coffee from the lobby, he stoped on the 12th floor and saw Akin his work best friend, they talked about how their weekend went
"I was out with my woman" Akin said, he got engaged recently
"My Dad was on my neck all weekend, that man should probably just take me as his second wife"
Bode complained and Akin bellowed
"Stop...it's not funny" Bode shoved, a frown touching his face
"I'm sorry!... And yeah, are you ready for your presentation, the investors were here early, and there is the new girl, she fine" Akin said, drawling on the last word.
"I'm ready, I think, let's just go" Bode said and they walked in, he struggled to retain his confident face, but, he was freaking out. He went to his favorite spot at the roof top to ease out some tension
He liked it when the sun penetrates his cloths and left him a kind of warmth. It was therapeutic.
...............................................
He ran over some stuffs when he got to his workspace, Benedicta, his neighbor, casted a few tantrums, pursing her sharply painted lips and itching the load of locs on her head. He was used to her noise and he was too focused to care. Akin walked in
"It's time" He announced and he walked out confidently, for a minute, he was blank, but he still hoped.
He would do well, or maybe he wouldn't.
He was up to find out.
