Part 1
Darkness consumed my vision.
For a moment, I could see nothing… Only an abyss of black, endless and suffocating, a void that seemed to swallow me whole. It was as if the very essence of light had been snuffed out, leaving only an oppressive silence. But amidst the stifling void, my senses awakened. Chaos erupted around me, like the roar of a thousand storms clashing.
The ground beneath me trembled with every distant explosion, the shockwaves rocking my body, sending a pulse of terror through my veins.
Boom! Boom! Boom!
The earth was shaking, as if the heavens themselves were falling to the ground. Bombs rained down, their violent explosions swallowing everything in their path. The blast wave sent debris flying in every direction. I could feel the heat of the fires, even through the layers of blackness that clouded my vision. The deafening roar of bombs, mingling with gunshots, screams, and the sickening sound of blades slicing through flesh, filled the air in a cacophony of death.
Above it all, I could hear the frantic footsteps of panicked soldiers, their boots slapping against the ground as they fled for their lives. Each footfall was a cry of desperation, echoing the terror in their hearts. Their frantic breaths were muffled by the chaos, but the sheer panic in their footsteps was unmistakable. And then, the blood-curdling shrieks of tribal warriors, their battle cries rising above the explosions, merging with the agonized wails of the fallen.
A warrior’s scream, guttural and raw, split the air as blades met flesh, the clash of metal against bone ringing in my ears like a death knell. Flesh met steel with sickening thuds. Blades sliced through the air, each strike a harbinger of death. The thud of bodies collapsing to the ground in lifeless heaps echoed like a grim drumbeat.
I could almost see it, the blood spilling, the bodies falling in a grotesque dance of death, each one an unspoken story of horror. The sounds, blurred and chaotic, seemed to build into a grotesque symphony, each note more horrifying than the last, until they sharpened with the return of my consciousness.
And then came the thudding.
Heavy, deliberate, unnerving. It was unlike any sound I had ever heard. Something—no, several somethings—moved through the battlefield with unnatural force, their every step causing the earth beneath me to tremble. The ground shuddered violently as they leaped from one spot to another, moving with an eerie, almost predatory precision. Guttural roars filled the air, savage and primal, cutting through the chaos like a knife.
I knew it immediately, predators.
Monsters that had descended to hunt us, to rip through the c*****e and claim what was left. Fear, raw and primal, flooded my veins. A new kind of terror gripped me, one I could not shake, as if the very essence of danger was breathing down my neck.
My eyes fluttered open, weak and heavy, fighting to focus through the haze. A high-pitched ringing screeched in my ears, a wall of noise that drowned out everything else for a moment. I blinked rapidly, trying to clear my vision, but my body was sluggish, battered, and disoriented. My limbs felt like lead, too heavy to move. My chest heaved, each breath shallow and painful. Cold dirt pressed against my face, the rough earth scraping against my cheek.
I had been lying face down, unconscious, for what seemed like hours—or was it days? Time had blurred in the haze of chaos. The impact of an explosion, a nearby blast had thrown me to the ground, and now, as I slowly regained my bearings, I realized, I was waking up in the middle of hell itself.
The world around me began to come into focus, slow but relentless. Fires raged in the distance, their infernal glow casting an eerie light over the devastation. The flames twisted in unnatural shapes, licking the sky like hungry demons, sending their smoke curling into the air, thick and suffocating. The air smelled of burning flesh, sweat, and the acrid stench of blood. It was a scent that would forever haunt me. Figures, shadows, moved frantically between the flames, clashing, falling, disappearing into the madness. I could hear the sickening sound of footsteps trudging through the muck of war soldiers fighting for their lives, others falling into darkness.
With a groan, I forced myself to move, struggling to push myself up. My arms screamed in protest, my body uncooperative, but I couldn’t afford to stay down. The battlefield was alive, and I couldn’t afford to be a casualty. My head swam, a thick fog clouding my vision. The pain in my skull was blinding, but there was no time for it. No time to rest.
I struggled to steady myself, my gaze darting across the battlefield. It was a warzone. A brutal war between military squads and tribal warriors, and monsters. Three towering figures, monstrous and dark, loomed in the distance, their forms shifting unnaturally as they moved with terrifying speed. They were humanoid, yet distinctly inhuman. Clawed hands, agile limbs, and shadowy forms made them appear like something out of a nightmare. They moved with impossible grace, cutting down my comrades with ease. Gunfire, explosives, nothing could touch them. Bullets passed through their bodies like mist, leaving no mark, no trace.
They were untouchable. Unstoppable.
I turn around with my breath hitching. A scream cut through the chaos, a woman’s voice. Desperate. Urgent. My heart skipped a beat as I recognized the voice. She was still out there, still fighting. My eyes scanned the battlefield, searching through the hellish flames and shadows for her.
Then I saw her there. A small group of soldiers was firing relentlessly at the advancing enemies, but she was among them, her rifle flashing in the smoke, cutting through the chaos with precision. Her eyes locked with mine, wide with terror, and she called my name again, her voice cracking under the weight of desperation.
She was calling me but I couldn’t reach her. I also don’t know her name though I recognize her voice.
The ground beneath me trembled, and I felt a presence, massive and suffocating. I turned, heart racing, but my vision blurred between reality and distortion. The sun glared in my eyes, and all I could see was a massive shadow looming over me. A clawed hand rose from the black abyss of the battlefield, extending toward me with deadly intent.
I didn’t even have time to scream.
Pain exploded across my neck. A searing, blinding agony as claws raked through my flesh, pulling me down into oblivion. The last thing I saw was her face, frozen in terror. And then, everything went dark.
