Mike caught on first. As soon as Sapphire said the word adopted, I saw him do the math, saw his expression change to one of alarm. Sandy was so caught up in Sapphire's story that it took her a little longer to get there, but once she understood she gasped and took a step backward before bursting into tears. Mike comforted her while I gave Duke a look that said--Now, see what you've done?
Sapphire looked confused as Sandy and Mike whispered back and forth to each other. Finally, Sandy turned to Sapphire and said in a shaky voice.
"That baby girl's name is Katie and she's all I have left of my sweet sister, too. I want you to meet her, Sapphire, you deserve that happiness and so does she. We think a little girl can never have too many people who love her."
