Chapter 4: Conversation Between Strangers
The afternoon breeze carried the sweet scent of blooming flowers through the Sanchez family's garden. Away from the lively conversations inside the house, the garden offered a peaceful escape, where only the rustling leaves and cheerful songs of birds filled the silence.
Richard Blackwood and Ariana Sanchez walked side by side along the stone pathway, neither of them speaking at first. The silence wasn't awkward, but it was filled with curiosity. They were two strangers brought together by the hopes of their families, each wondering what the other was truly like.
Richard was the first to break the silence.
"I suppose introductions are the best place to start," he said with a faint smile.
Ariana smiled politely.
"I think so too."
He extended his hand.
"I'm Richard Blackwood."
She shook it gently.
"Ariana Sanchez."
"I know," Richard replied with a soft laugh. "Our parents have mentioned your name more times than I can count."
Ariana laughed quietly.
"The same goes for you."
The tension between them eased a little.
After a few more steps, Richard looked ahead and spoke honestly.
"I never imagined I'd meet my future wife this way."
Ariana glanced at him.
"Neither did I."
Silence settled between them once again before Richard asked,
"What kind of marriage do you hope to have?"
Ariana took a moment to think.
"I want a marriage where my husband is also my best friend. Someone I can laugh with, pray with, travel with, and share my deepest thoughts without fear of being judged."
Richard nodded thoughtfully.
"That's a beautiful answer."
She smiled.
"What about you?"
He folded his hands behind his back.
"I believe marriage is built on commitment before feelings."
Ariana raised an eyebrow.
"What do you mean?"
"I believe emotions change. Some days love feels effortless, and other days it may not. There will be disagreements, misunderstandings, and difficult moments. Commitment is the decision to stay, to work through those moments, and to choose your partner every single day."
Ariana considered his words carefully.
"I agree," she admitted. "But I also believe friendship, affection, and understanding are just as important."
Richard smiled.
"I don't disagree."
They continued walking beneath the shade of the tall trees.
After a while, Richard asked another question.
"Do you believe an arranged marriage can work?"
Ariana sighed softly.
"I honestly don't know. I've always imagined falling in love first and getting married afterward."
Richard chuckled.
"I imagined choosing my own wife too."
Their eyes met briefly before they both laughed.
"I guess life had other plans," Ariana said.
"It certainly did," Richard replied.
Their conversation gradually became easier.
Richard learned that Ariana loved travelling, reading, and discovering new cultures. She dreamed of building a successful career while continuing to grow as a person.
Ariana discovered that Richard valued peace above everything else. He dreamed of expanding the Blackwood family business, providing for his loved ones, and creating a home filled with stability and respect.
When they reached a wooden bench beneath a large oak tree, they sat down.
After a moment of silence, Ariana looked at him.
"If our parents hadn't arranged this meeting, do you think we would've met?"
Richard thought for a few seconds before answering honestly.
"I don't know."
She smiled.
"I don't think we would have."
He wasn't offended.
"I expected you to say that."
She laughed softly.
"You did?"
"You seem like someone who likes writing her own story."
Ariana looked at him in surprise before smiling.
"Maybe you're right."
As the afternoon drew to an end, Richard stood and offered her his hand.
"I think our families are probably wondering what happened to us."
She accepted his hand with a smile.
"They probably are."
Together, they walked back toward the house.
When they entered the living room, both families looked at them expectantly.
Richard exchanged a brief glance with Ariana before speaking.
"We're grateful for today, but marriage is a lifetime decision. We'd like a little more time to get to know each other before giving our answer."
Ariana nodded in agreement.
"I feel the same way."
A warm smile spread across both families.
"That's a wise decision," Mr. Blackwood said.
"No one should rush such an important choice," Mr. Sanchez added.
As the Blackwood family prepared to leave, Richard and Ariana shared one final glance.
They were still strangers.
But somewhere between honesty, laughter, and quiet understanding, the first thread of an unexpected friendship had begun to form.
Chapter 5: Getting to Know Each Other
Three months passed after Richard and Ariana agreed to take their time before making a final decision about marriage.
Instead of rushing into an engagement, both families respected their choice and gave them the space they needed to get to know one another.
During those months, Richard and Ariana spoke regularly. They exchanged messages almost every day, talked on the phone in the evenings, met for coffee after work, and attended family dinners together.
With each conversation, the awkwardness between them slowly disappeared.
They laughed more easily.
They understood each other better.
A genuine friendship was beginning to blossom.
One evening, Ariana sat on the balcony of her apartment, watching the sunset paint the Los Angeles skyline in shades of gold and orange. Her phone rang.
Richard Blackwood.
A smile appeared on her face as she answered.
"Good evening, Richard."
"Good evening, Ariana. I hope I'm not calling at a bad time."
"Not at all."
For a brief moment, neither of them spoke.
Richard broke the silence.
"How was work today?"
She sighed dramatically.
"Busy. We had meetings almost all day."
"I know the feeling," Richard replied with a chuckle. "I finally completed a project my team has been working on for weeks."
"Congratulations."
"Thank you."
Their conversation flowed naturally. They talked about work, family, their favorite meals, childhood memories, and even the places they dreamed of visiting someday.
Before they realized it, almost thirty minutes had passed.
Richard glanced at the time.
"I've kept you long enough. You should get some rest."
Ariana smiled.
"I enjoyed talking to you."
"So did I."
"Goodnight, Richard."
"Goodnight, Ariana."
The call ended, but both of them found themselves smiling at their phones.
A week later, Richard sent Ariana a message.
Would you like to meet for coffee tomorrow after work?
Her reply came almost immediately.
I'd love to.
The following evening, they met at Blue Bottle Coffee in downtown Los Angeles.
The café buzzed with quiet conversations as the rich aroma of freshly brewed coffee filled the air. They chose a table by the window overlooking the busy street.
"So," Richard began, stirring his coffee, "how has your week been?"
"Stressful," Ariana admitted with a laugh, "but manageable."
For the next few hours, they talked without pressure or awkwardness.
They shared embarrassing childhood stories, discussed books they loved, exchanged opinions about travelling, and spoke about their careers and future ambitions.
As the evening went on, Richard noticed something about Ariana.
She loved adventure.
"If someone asked me to go on a road trip right now," she said with a grin, "I'd probably say yes."
Richard laughed.
"I'd ask for at least two weeks to prepare."
She burst into laughter.
"I knew you were going to say that."
"I like being organized."
"And I like surprises."
He smiled.
"I suppose we're complete opposites."
"Maybe," Ariana replied, "or maybe we're just balancing each other."
Richard considered her words before smiling.
"Maybe you're right."
Hours later, they stepped outside.
The cool evening breeze greeted them as the city lights illuminated the streets.
"I had a wonderful time," Ariana said.
"So did I," Richard replied.
She smiled.
"See you soon?"
"I'd like that."
They exchanged warm smiles before walking toward their separate cars.
As Ariana drove home, she replayed their conversations in her mind.
Richard was thoughtful.
Kind.
Respectful.
He made her feel comfortable.
Meanwhile, Richard couldn't stop thinking about Ariana's laughter.
It was genuine.
Warm.
Infectious.
For the first time since they had met, both of them realized something had changed.
Their friendship was growing naturally.
Whether friendship would one day become love...
Only time would tell.
