Chapter Eight Giulianna sat at one end of the sofa, watching television. Helle sat at the other end, watching the girl. Clearly, Giulianna was not aware of being half dead and lying in a hospital bed. Clearly, the girl believed she was living life as ever she had—except a better life now that she had a roof over her head and she was no longer forced to sleep in the streets. She seemed contented, here. Helle felt much the same way, having the young girl around. Contented. Peaceful. They had become a little family, just the two of them. Perhaps Giulianna had no more contact with her father and grandmother, Helle had no more contact with her daughter and husband, but they two could live together as parent and child.
