Chapter Six When they arrived in hospital, Kadisha knew precisely where to go. She led Helle to a room with two beds and a curtain dividing them. Helle nearly walked past the person in the first bed. The face was so purple and swollen she did not realize straight away that this was Giulianna. Kadisha remained silent. Helle could hear the person in the second bed breathing gently, most likely asleep. She stepped closer to Giulianna, fascinated by the hideousness of the girl’s face. “She has been badly injured,” Helle said. “One can tell just by looking.” Kadisha came around to the far side of the hospital bed and wrapped a loving hand around Giulianna’s wrist. “She’s in a coma, but I’ve been talking to her anyway.
