Elara's POV
"MUM! YOU HAVE TO LET ME OUT!" I shouted, banging my fist against the wooed. My room became like a prison.
Yanking at the door handle, my heart raced extremely fast.
"Open the door! You can not just lock me in!"
There was no reply.
Pressing my ear against the door, I hoped to hear footsteps or maybe my dad's voice but unfortunately, the silence felt even louder than my screams.
It did not take long before tears began to roll down my cheeks.
I spun around, my eyes searching for something, anything at all. Fortunately, my gaze caught my phone lying carelessly on the vanity.
"Maya!" I whispered desperately, grabbing it and dialing her number with shaky hands.
The first ring went through with no response, my heart was pounding.
I gave it a second trial. Her voice came through. "Hey, Elara--"
"Maya, I need you." I said hastily.
"Elara, relax. Are you okay? Is everything okay with you?" Maya's tone was laced in concern.
Shaking my head in disagreement even though she could not see me, my voice cracked. "She locked me in. My mum. She actually locked me in my room, Maya!"
"What?" Her voice rose in disbelief. "What the hell, are you serious?"
"Yes, I need you to come get me out Maya! I am losing my mind." I ran a hand through my hair in frustration.
"Relax Elara, I will be there." She said without hesitation.
Throwing myself on the bed with my phone pressed tight to my chest, breathing felt hard. The adrenaline felt earlier was now replaced by exhaustion and disbelief.
How was my life slowly crumbling? Locked doors, false arrests, secrets, lies? How did I let all of this happen?
The blame was heavy on my shoulders, this was all my fault, everything had changed and I felt like it was all because of me.
Minutes passed by in silence, my thoughts pressing in closer with every second.
Then my phone buzzed, jolting me back to reality.
Maya!
"Hey, I am outside but the front door is locked." She said.
"Break in."
"What? Elara, are you crazy? Why would I break into your house?" Maya's tone was laced in fear. Honestly, the last thing I wanted to do was involve her in my mess but I was left with no choice.
"Maya, Break. In." I emphasized my words.
"Elara, I can't! What if someone sees me? What if your mum calls the cops again?"
Maya's paranoia was beginning to frustrate me, I had not realized when I snapped at her. "Just do it!"
"Fi-ne, I'll ju-st try to do it my own w-ay." Maya stammered.
It took longer than expected, evey minute passed by slowly and I was beginning to lose hope until I eventually heard the creaking sound of the front door.
A heavy sigh of relief escaped from my lips as the sound of footsteps drew closer.
"Elara, step back." Maya yelled.
I did as she said and with a grunt, shuffling noises echoed outside. After a tensed minute, the door to my room opened wide and Maya rushed in with a wide grin plastered on her face.
"I can not believe I just broke in."
"How did you do that?" My eyes wide open, my expectations were that she would break the door but surprisingly the door was still intact.
Maya waved her hairpin in my face. "My cousin taught me, do not ask why."
"You are a lifesaver." I said. "Officially the coolest person I know." Grabbing her hand, we rushed out of my room. "Come on, we need to get to the station. Now."
"Elara, are you sure this is a good idea? Going to the station? I mean your mum is probably there." Maya argued.
We bolted downstairs, the house was eerily quiet.
"We should not be going to the station."
I halted in front of the door and gazed at Maya. "There is no we in this." I said, air quoting my words.
"I need you to stay back, wait here, the house is open and Lorien might be back from school any minute from now. I can't let anything else happen, I can't ruin anything else."
"El.."
"Please." I pressed further.
Maya sighed. "Fine but you need to be careful. None of this is your fault, okay?"
Nodding my head, my legs moved fast. Already halfway down the streets, the wind pushed my hair back and forth. My heart was racing and my thoughts echoed loud.
Was Dad with mum? Or had he left? His car was not in his driveway.
I eventually arrived at the station, dad's car was parked right outside and that meant he was still with mum.
Inside, the place smelt of coffee and cold air. I walked up to the front desk, trying to catching my breath.
"I am here to see Jordan, Jordan Vale."
The receptionist glanced at her computer for a few minutes. "Sorry but visitation is not allowed during an active investigation ma'am. Unless you are family of course."
"I--"
Uncle Fred, he would let me in!
"What about uncle Fred? He uhm, he asked me to come."
"He's out." She said politely. "Please wait outside."
I slowly pulled away, it felt like my whole world was crumbling slowly and I was watching all of it happen.
With my eyes on the floor, I was about to turn and leave when the front doors opened, causing me to snap my head up and gaze at the culprit who had just walked in.
It was Jordan's mum, she had a poker face on, her hands tucked into her pockets. Although it was obvious she struggled to maintain composure, i could tell she was burning inside.
Her eyes scanned the station until they finally landed on the officer behind the desk.
Not even bothering to spare me a glance, she spoke curtly. "I am here to see my son. And for the record, he will only be speaking to his lawyer from this point forward."
