Chapter Thirty Nine

1013 Words
Jordan's POV The room felt cold. Not the type of cold that makes you shiver but the type that makes the atmosphere tensed. The silence lasted because I refused to answer the question. "How I was connected to Elara." Gabriel cross leaned against the wall, his arms were crossed and his expression was almost unreadable since he struggled to hide the curiosity in his eyes. The way he watched me, like I was a prey. Elara's mum stood besides him. Her hands placed on her hips and a questioning look on her face. "I asked a question and I demand an answer from you Jordan." My lips remained sealed. This was not because i was protecting myself but it was for Elara. There was the need to protect her from the people in this room, especially Gabriel Cross. Gabriel stepped forward. "Speak or else we will keep you locked up for as long as possible." Staring at him, my hands gripped the desk tight and the words slipped out of my mouth. "Elara is in danger." I said slowly, my voice firm. "All i have been trying to do is keep her safe." A look of confusion flashed on Elara's mum's face. "Danger? From what? Seems like you are the only threat here." "No, of course not!" I spoke too soon. Clearing my throat, I adjusted my posture and slowly lowered my tone. "No, not from me. From someone else. I can not tell you in full details now but you need to trust me. Your daughter is safe with me." "Trust you?" Elara's mum choked out a bitter laughter. "All you have done is involve my daughter in trouble. I know about the fight at the music room, or was that also your way of protecting her?" I ran a hand through my hair in frustration and there was this urge to tell her everything. From the fact that Elara is not human, to Adrian, to our mate bond, everything but it would be too much for her to handle, for anyone to handle, even Elara. "He is lying." Gabriel Cross blurted out. "No, i am not." I pressed further. Elara's mum was practically lost in her own thoughts while Gabriel took steps closer to me, fists clenched. "One more lie from you and I---" "There is a lot you do not know about your daughter!" My words were able to snap Elara's mum out of her thoughts and she was able to stop Gabriel from punching me when she yelled. "Stop." It was her turn to take further steps closer to me. "What do you mean?" She asked. It was like Gabriel did not want me saying anything, before I could respond, he raised his hand too fast but I instinctively rushed out of my seat before his hands could meet my face. Then the door burst open. "Do not even dare." It was my mother, she stared in anger and the stunned officer besides her had clearly lost control of the situation. The Chief officer who was still lurking around the corridor heard the noise and stormed in. "What the hell is going on here?" "She forced her way in, i tried to stop her." The officer quickly pointed at my mum. "Well, i just stopped my son from getting hit in the face." Mum retorted. The Chief cleared his throat and narrowed his eye at her. "This is an active investigation, you---" "I am aware and that is why i am here to inform you all that my son will not be saying a word to anyone unless his lawyer is present." There was a moment of silence, then the chief sighed heavily. "There is not enough evidence to hold him anyways..." "What?" Gabriel yelled in anger. "We are letting him go, for now but however, he is under surveillance, he does not get ti leave town and an officer will be assigned to check in with him daily until all of this is cleared." My mum nodded her head. "That is acceptable." Everyone averted their gazes on me and I knew it was my queue to leave. I slowly made my way out of the room with my head bent low and Gabriel's gaze burning into my back. Sneaking one last glance at Elara's mum, her expression was unreadable. As we exited the room, my eyes spotted Elara. She was sitting on one of the benches in the waiting area, tapping her foot against the ground impatiently. It was like she sensed me. She rose when her eyes met mine, taking a step forward, eyes shining with relief. "I would not do that if I were you." Mum warned her harshly, causing Elara to halt in her steps. "You, inside the car." My mum snapped at me. I wanted to talk to Elara, my heart yearned for her but mum had been through so much today, i just i wanted to spare her some drama. I followed my mum out of the station and as expected the ride back home was suffocating. She did not speak and neither did i. When we pulled into the driveway, I barely waited for the car to stop before opening the door. We walked into the house and the second the door was locked, mum let it all out. "Jordan, I warned you about that girl!" "Mum, you know i can not abandon Elara, she needs protection. Especially from Adrian who apparently is her second mate. Or Gabriel who is a hunter." My mother's eyes flared. "I do not care Jordan! You are putting all of us in danger, do you even remember what happened to your brother?" The words stung but the tiredness in me overweighed the zeal to defend myself. Turning around, i made my way toward my room but my attention caught something on the table. A white slip. I walked closer, staring at it. My heart raced fast. "Jordan--" A bus ticket. "I can explain." To another town. Picking it up slowly, the date was stamped bold. Tomorrow.
