Jordan's POV
"You are doing the right thing Jordan, giving her distance is the only way to protect her more than you know." Mum's voice rang out softly.
To protect was a promise I had made but it was eating me slowly. For every second I stayed away, for ever hour I did not see her, the pain dug deeper inside of me.
Mum's firm touch on my shoulder pulled me from my thoughts. Her eyes narrowed at me.
I released a heavy sigh and ran a hand through my hair in frustration, I was losing it.
Then I remembered the glowing markings that were beneath Elara's skin, it lingered in my thoughts like a memory that was refusing to fade.
I had never seen anything like those marks, the seemed ancient and Elara did not even know she had them, she was completely clueless.
"What does it mean..." I paused to gulp a lump down my throat. "When a werewolf or human has markings, what does it mean?"
I watched my mother's face fall in defeat, her body stiffened and she folded her arms over her chest. "Why are you suddenly asking me that?" She raised a brow at me.
I shrugged in response. "I read it somewhere." I mumbled.
Mum eyed me in suspicion, she leaned closer and threw a questioning gaze at me. "Where exactly?"
"Just an old article I saw lying around the house, it mentioned something about golden markings beneath the skin but the article never explained what it meant so I just assumed you would know since, you are way older and you probably have experience in stuff like this." I ranted.
There was a pause from her end, a moment of silence fell between us. She was either trying to catch the lie or deciding whether to call me out. Either way, I did not care.I wasn’t depending on her answer. I was going to figure out what Elara was on my own.
"It means the wolf is special." She finally blurted out, her voice clipped.
I furrowed my brows in confusion. "What do you mean by special? How?" I threw questions at her in curiosity but my face fell when she didn’t say another word.
Instead, she turned abruptly, walking towards the door. "You need to get dressed Jordan, the council meeting starts in less than an hour and if you want them taking us serious then we need to be early."
"So you are not going to tell me what you mean by special?" I yelled but I got no response.
I stared at her as she slowly walked away, she was obviously hiding something but for now I was willing to let it go because the meeting with the council was more urgent.
Without wasting anymore time, I dressed into a black long sleeved shirt and a pair of grey suit pants clad to my long legs.
I joined my mum in the car and we drove in complete silence.
The drive only took an hour and some minutes. We arrived at the council chambers and I honestly expected my mum to give me some stern pep talk but instead, she turned to me and flashed me a reassuring smile.
We got off the car and speak of the actual devil, Adrian that bastard was already there, standing besides one of his pack members.
The lazy smirk plastered on his face made me clench my fist tight and grit my teeth in anger. It looked like he had been waiting just to provoke me and in all honesty, it was working.
"Look who is here. The little lover boy werewolf." Adrian crawled, he spoke in a mocking tone.
"Adrian." I said, my tone was as cold as ice.
"What about your girlfriend? She dumped you after that day or what?" Adrian choked out a hysteric laughter and his stupid pack member laughed along to his dumb joke.
I felt mum place a hand on my arm and whisper. "Who is he talking about? What girlfriend and what happened the other day?" Her voice grew sharper she was losing patience.
"See you inside Adrian." I announced, mum and I pushed past them
Inside the stone-carved chamber, power and authority clung to the air.
At the center of the circular hall sat the council of elders, six of them, dressed in red robes and emotionless.
Suddenly, Adrian's voice rang out loud. "I was the first Alpha to mark Blackwater falls! I and my pack have been here even before his dumb pack arrived.
By law, it is mine to claim!" His voice was laced with rage.
"The existence of you and your pack does not officially mark Blackwater falls as your territory." Mum spoke in a defensive tone but Adrian was quick to snap back. "Shut up!" He sneered.
I hated the way he addressed my mother so I turned to her and mumbled. "I can handle it."
I stepped forward, handing a scroll to the nearest elder. "According to this registry, Blackwater falls still shows as unclaimed, no sign of any mark was recorded, no proof of allegiance sworn too."
The room slowly began to echo with murmurs.
"You are twisting the law you sly wolf!" Adrian barked.
The elders raised a hand and surprisingly, silence fell.
One of them stood up, he looked like the oldest among them. He leaned forward, his voice was raspy and rough.
"Only blood can decides who rules. Territory can not serve two alphas!"
My heart began to race extremely fast, I turned to gaze at my mum and we had matching gazes of fear.
"What does that mean?" Mum asked quietly.
"It means that only a pack that buries another beneath the soil of Blackwater falls may truly claim the territory."
I felt my heart drop.
In other words, I had to kill Adrian to claim the territory or he might end up killing me first.
