Elara's POV
We were able to get off the trail from my mum's car so Adrian snatched the opportunity and drove straight to the gas station.
The gas station looked like something out of an horror movie, broken lights, rushing pumps and not a single sight of anyone but us. Adrian pulled the black convertible behind the crumbling building just as mum's car began to show in sight.
"Come on! Move fast!" Adrian ordered as he jumped out.
Ethan and I rushed after him, my heart racing extremely fast.
Adrian reached behind an old trashcan and yanked a dusty grey sedan, this thing literally looked like it had not been driven in years.
"This is your backup plan?" Ethan yelled in disbelief.
"It is not that different from your crappy ass jeep you know." Adrian fired back.
As expected, Ethan scoffed and snapped at him. "Excuse you? That jeep was a birthday gift, it cost an arm and a leg."
"Then why do you not ask the jeep to save you right now." Adrian retorted.
I knew Ethan was not going to back down from this conversation and neither Adrian so I had to butt in.
"Enough guys!" I yelled and fortunately, that was enough to keep both of them from tearing their throats out.
My gaze shifted to Adrian. "Are you sure this will work?"
"Trust me, she will not follow this thing and if it goes not work, we move to plan B." Adrian said nonchalantly. He pulled open the door and hopped in like this was not his first time.
"Last I checked, I do not remember making any agreements about a plan B." Ethan raised a brow at Adrian.
"The split up plan..." Adrian trailed off, he hotwired the ignition with ease. How was he so calm in a situation like this?
"You are going to need to explain this plan B again." I mumbled.
"Can we just hope plan A works?" He paused to usher us in. "Get in now!"
Ethan and I got into the back seat.
"I think the car is coming." I peeked through the dusty windows.
Adrian drove the crappy sedan to a different side of the road, heading in the opposite direction from where we came.
Just immediately, mum's car flew past the station, speeding straight ahead, supposedly still chasing the convertible hidden behind the wall of the station.
"She took the bait." Adrian smirked.
A heavy sigh of relief escaped from my lips. "I can not believe that just worked." I chuckled nervously.
The tension in the car was thick until Adrian offered. "Now that we are clear, want me to drive you home?"
I hesitated, my gaze moved to the window and i was reminded of Jordan, the look in his eyes cut deeper than any words could. The thought of him seeing Adrian and I together again, scared me. There was no point hurting him again.
"The bus stop is fine." I said hastily, avoiding Adrian's gaze.
"Well since, thanks to you guys, my Jeep is stuck in the woods. I would prefer being dropped at home." Ethan perked up.
"Do I look like I care?" Adrian snapped, his hands tight around the wheel.
Ethan rolled his eyes and muttered a cuss under his breath while Adrian drove us out of the station.
"Why do we have to take this crappy car anyways? Elara's mum is no longer on our necks." Ethan pointed out, the sound of the car engine was quite loud and frustrating.
"Better safe than sorry." Adrian mumbled.
Some minutes later, the car pulled to a stop at the bus stop closest to my neighborhood.
Adrian turned slightly in his seat and looked at me with a wide smirk. "We make a pretty good team, Elara."
I smiled weakly. "Yeah....sure."
Deep inside of me, my stomach twisted and there was this weight in my chest I could not ignore, a sense of guilt. I was not even sure what exactly i had done wrong but Jordan lingered in my mind and it felt like I had betrayed something between us.
Ethan and i got off the car and watched Adrian drive off.
"He is so weird." Ethan finally said.
I nodded in agreement. "Yeah... dangerously weird."
We started walking towards my street, the silence between us finally breaking as Ethan asked. "What do you think your mum is planning with those people?"
Sighing heavily, I muttered. "I am not sure."
I paused to gaze at Ethan. "You should probably head up. Your parents are going to be really mad that you did not show up for work."
Ethan groaned dramatically. "Ugh! They are going to kill me."
I chuckled lightly even though my mind remained fixated on Jordan.
"I am walking you all the way home. I just want to make sure you actually get inside safe." Ethan glanced at me.
There was no point arguing. "Fine."
The rest of the walk was in silence, a heavy silence, one that was full with questions swirling in our heads.
When we passed Jordan's house, my steps slowly faltered, the lights were on and his shadow was across his window.
The urge to walk up to that door and knock engulfed me. I wanted to talk to him, to explain everything.
But Ethan's expression was clearly uncomfortable. He said nothing but his silence spoke enough.
So I just kept walking. My conversation with Jordan would have to wait.
As I reached the front door, I turned to flash Ethan a small, tired smile.
He rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly and said. "If you ever need me, I am here. Okay?"
I nodded." Thanks Ethan."
"And maybe talk to your mum about all of this."
Just as I was about to respond, my phone beeped.
A message from Ethan.
"I thought you should have it."
I tapped it open, it was a blurry photo.
My mum and those people in black from the woods.
I clenched my jaw and the grip on my phone tightened.
"I am confronting her." I said quietly.
Tonight.
