Chapter Sixty Three

1105 Words
Jordan's POV "One of the council's eldest is here." Mum said calmly, she adjusted the hem of her blouse. "You will want to clean up and meet us in the dining room in ten. Do not keep him waiting, Jordan." My stomach twisted as i nodded my head slowly. The council, great timing. The door shut close behind her and my gaze shifted back to Corvin, who was now leaning against the wall. "I wonder what they want. The council do not just show up for tea." I mumbled. Corvin shrugged. "Who knows? Maybe it means something is about to change. That is why you have to act natural like you have got everything under control." I raised a brow at him. "You mean, act like I am not falling apart on the inside and that I have no idea what I am doing." He stepped forward and leaned closer to me, lowering his voice. "Look, this is the perfect opportunity man. You just need to play your role, act like the obedient son, just do whatever it takes to keep them looking the other way." I leaned against the wall, arms crossed. "They could be here to talk about that jerk head Adrian." Corvin replied. "I think they are just tired of waiting. Nobody is making any moves yet." "So you think they are in a rush to find out who ends up claiming the territory?" Corvin paused, locking gaze with me. "I have no idea Jordan but if the council are getting impatient then it means you need to act fast, which is why we have to go through with the plan. Kill Adrian, it is the only way to end this once and for all, you heard the council say it." I looked away, my heart racing extremely fast. "I do not know Corvin. I mean Elara still needs to understand all of this. Killing Adrian will just get her more confused than she already is. Elara...." "Jordan!" Corvin snapped at me, interrupting me halfway my sentence. A serious look grew on his face. "Forget Elara, at least for now. This is not about her. This is about survival. You want to keep the council off your back? You want to protect mum? Me and Isaac? Your position as Alpha? Then Adrian has to go." My eyes fell to the floor. "Plus, look on the bright side. You can have Elara once Adrian is gone for good. With time, she will understand everything." I did not answer. Corvin's words rendered me speechless. "Get your head in the game Jordan." He muttered. "We can come up with a plan but for now, try to make the council understand." With that, Corvin turned around and walked towards the door. "I trust you will do the right thing and remember what mum said, don't keep them waiting." With that, Corvin stepped out of my room. I remained on the spot, the weight of everything pressing me down as I carefully braced myself for dinner with a council elder. By the time I made it downstairs, the house felt heavier, the air was thick with an unspoken tension. Mum was seated at the dining table, opposite an older man with grey hair and an obvious scar running down his cheek. Something about his presence sent chills down my spine. Mum was trying to hold a decent conversation with him but it was clear he was not listening. "Oh, there he is." Mum said with an awkward smile, pointing towards me like I was some kind of prize. "Jordan." The man called out my name, his voice sharp yet calm. I bowed my head at him in respect. "Elder." "I will get straight to the point." He did not bother introducing himself, he folded his hands on the table. "Another council elder is currently paying a visit to Adrian. We have been watching both of you for weeks now." My eyes caught mum adjusting her posture. "Neither of you have done what needs to be done." His words caused me to gulp a lump down my throat. "Two alphas cannot share a single territory. That is not balance. I am here on behalf of the entire council elders, we are growing impatient." His eyes bore into mine. "Sir, with all due respect. I am working on this, it is not as serious as-----" The elder cut me off harshly. "Do not fool yourself. This is about order. Our laws are simple, two alphas can not coexist. One has to leave or fall." He rose to his feet. "You have been given enough time to act. We are now at the edge of that time. If no move is made soon.." He leaned close the me. "The council will intervene and when we do, it will not be clean." Mum's jaw tightened at his warning but she dared not to intervene. He walked towards the door, pausing to speak. "The next time we speak, I expect progress. The same thing goes to Adrian. Either that or there will be consequences." And with that, he was gone. I could not move, this sudden pressure overwhelmed me, it was suffocating. The elder's warning felt like a ticking time bomb. A moment of silence passed by, I was lost in my thoughts until mum's voice rang out loud, firm and quiet. "You should get some rest, Jordan. Think about everything he said." I nodded stiffly and made my way upstairs, a lot swirled in my head, like a storm I could not shut off. As I entered my room, I began to pace, trying to shudder off the dread I was feeling. Everything was happening too fast, too soon. If the elders visited Adrian for the same thing too then that meant Adrian would be feeling the same pressure too, the pressure to kill me. All of a sudden, a sudden knock on my window made my heart race fast. My instincts kicked in immediately and I clenched my fist tight, ready for defense? Was it the hunters? Were they back? I slowly tiptoed towards the window, prepared for anything. I yanked it open. Then I froze. It was Elara, her eyes wide and her breathing hitched like she had run the whole way here. For a second, neither of us spoke. We just stared. I felt the tension in my chest loosen, the storm in my head quieted. This sudden relief surged through me. My heart, which had been troubled over the elder's warning suddenly flipped at the sight of her. She was all i needed to calm the storm.
