Chapter Fifty Four

1014 Words
Elara's POV Before Ethan could argue any further, The maths teacher stepped into the class. She dropped a pile of textbooks on the desk in front and immediately dived into the lesson for today, thankfully that was enough to keep Ethan quiet. Class began and as usual, my brain slowly zoned out. Numbers, formulas, shapes and equations blurred before my eyes. Maths was never really my thing, now was even worse because I had other things to think about. The bell eventually rang, signifying the end of today's maths lesson. The class roared in chattering noises, my eyes caught Jordan rising a little too fast from his seat. Without waiting for Ethan and Maya, i gathered my books and rushed after him into the crowded hallways. "Hey!" I yelled, catching up besides him. Jordan glared at me with a small smile. "Hey, how are you?" His smile brought a smile on my face. "I am good." "People in class were saying your mum walked you all the way into the hallways this morning." Jordan started, a concerned look settled on his face. A small sigh escaped my lips, everyone were still talking about it? "She did." I nodded slowly. "But, it is not what they think. She actually wanted to see Gabriel Cross." At the mention of "Gabriel Cross", Jordan's smile faded. His brows furrowed in confusion. "Do not worry." I hastily said, flashing him a reassuring smile. "Everything is going to be okay." I said. Jordan did not look so convinced by my words but he did not argue either. We stopped at his locker. I leaned casually against the one besides his and asked. "So, what are you doing after school?" Jordan shrugged. "Nothing out of the ordinary. Why?" "Good." I said. "I plan on trailing Gabriel Cross after school. Just to see if he is up to anything suspicious." Jordan's eyes roamed around the hallways as if trying to make sure no one was listening to our conversation, then he leaned close to me. "Elara, that sounds dangerous." His eyes widened. "Trust me, it will not be." Raising my hand in mock surrender, my gaze met his. "Not if you come with me at least." Jordan hesitated for a second, then he gently shook his head. "I really wish I could Elara but you know how things are like now for I and my family. I can not leave them right now, I have to watch over them and make sure they are safe. The hunters could return back anytime from now." Disappoinment washed over me but I struggled not to make it obvious. "Okay....I understand." "Try not to go after Gabriel Cross, Elara. At least not now. It is dangerous." He said. I struggled to avoid eye contact with him. "Sure, I guess." Deep down, my mind was still on Gabriel Cross and I knew I would not be at rest until my plan was executed. I needed answers to a lot of questions swirling in my head and following Gabriel Cross seemed like the perfect answer. As a matter of fact, following Gabriel Cross could make me gather one or two evidences on him. At least, anything that could prove that he was involved in the attack at Jordan's house. I wanted to tell Jordan all of these but at the same time, I did not want it to seem like I was persistent so I nodded. A few more classes passed by in a haze and it was lunch time. I made my way into the cafeteria, at first my eyes caught the table my friends were sitting but then my gaze shifted to the table by the end of the room where Adrian was sitting all alone. Adrian leaned back in his seat, his eyes gazed at me with suspicion as I halted in front of him. "You? What are you doing here?" He asked in a dry tone. I rested my elbows on the table and kept my tone calm. "I just want to talk to you." Adrian raised a brow at me before choking out an hysteric laughter. "Talk to me? That is new." "I know Gabriel Cross is after you too." I went straight to the point. Adrian's smile faded, just for a brief second. "Took you long enough to realize that, your mom is not innocent too you know." He glanced past my shoulder. I stiffened but hastily brushed it off. "Well, that is not the point." "Then what is?" He folded his arms at me with both his brows arched at me in curiosity. "I am planning to trail Gabriel after school...to see if I can find anything unusual with him." Adrian clapped. "Okay, good luck but how does that have to do with me?" Biting my lower lip in anger and swallowing every bit of pride I had left inside of me. "I need your help, I can not go alone." He leaned in slightly, wriggling his brows at me playfully. "So what about your perfect sweetheart Jordan? Too busy for you?" Adrian's words were slowly getting on my nerves but I knew he was just taunting me, self control had to be maintained regardless of how much of a jerk he was. "He is watching over his family." Adrian stared for a moment longer before finally nodding his head in agreement. "Fine, I will come with you." His voice low but firm. I let out a heavy sigh I had not even realized I was holding. "Thanks." The least I could do was show gratitude. "Do not thank me too soon. I could change my mind." Adrian snapped at me. "Plus if things go sideways, I am not saving your ass." I rolled my eyes. "Noted." "i will see you at the parking lot after school?" "It is a date." Adrian winked at me. I got up from the table, but as I slowly walked away, unease settled deep inside of me. What if I had just made a mistake? What if trusting Adrian was where the real danger lied?
