Elara's POV
The rest of the classes passed by really fast but my mind was not on any of them. The only thing replaying in my head at that moment was that i had convinced Adrian to come with me after school to trail Gabriel Cross.
Something about the thought disturbed me and no, it had nothing to do with the secrets that Gabriel was keeping. It was the fact that I had just made a deal with someone even more unpredictable.
What was i even thinking when i asked him? I barely knew anything about Adrian asides the fact he was some psychotic dude after Jordan's life.
The bell for closing hours eventually rang, students rushed into the hallways like freed prisoners, laughter and chattering noises filled the air.
I made my way to my locker while trying to steady my rapid heartbeat that had pretty much being racing since lunch.
"Please tell me you are not still going through with that crazy idea of yours?" Ethan's voice rang from behind.
Leaning on my locker, my eyes averted towards the direction of his voice, he was standing there, his arms folded and the expression on his face was one of fear and worry.
"Please tell me you are not about to try and convince me not to." I replied in a bored tone.
"Elara--"
I cut him halfway through his sentence. "Ethan, I have to."
"No you do not." He shot back. "Gabriel is dangerous, that was what you said and I am taking your word for it. If he is the one behind the supposed attack at Jordan's house, then you should be trying to avoid him rather than follow him. Also, have you thought about the consequences of him finding out?"
Struggling to keep my voice calm, a small sigh escaped from my lips. "I am not going alone."
Ethan furrowed his brows in confusion. "Jordan? Really?"
I knew if I told him that I was no longer going with Jordan but with Adrian then Ethan would act even more paranoid because he barely even knew who Adrian was.
His eyes narrowed. "I really hoped Jordan tried to talk you out of it since you pretty much listen to only him."
If only Ethan knew that Jordan had tried...
I turned to my locker, placed all my books in it before shutting the door firmly.
"I am going to be careful, I promise. There is absolutely no need to worry about me." Gripping the strap of my bag tightly, I stepped out of the school doors, my heart raced faster as my eyes caught Adrian, already waiting by the gate with his arms folded and eyes as dark as ever.
As my legs drew closer to him, one thought echoed loud in my head.
"Had I just made the worst decision of my life?"
Adrian pointed to the left direction, my gaze tracked Gabriel Cross as he headed towards the staff parking lot.
"We should wait in my car." Adrian said casually, pointing towards a sleek black convertible parked under a tree. "Till he leaves, then we follow." He added.
"Your car?" I hesitated, my brows raised at him.
Adrian smirked at the uncertainty in my tone. "Relax Elara, I am not going to lock you in my car, drive off and kidnap you." He raised both his hands in mock surrender but his words only made me more skeptical. "Sounds like you already have a plan in your head." I mumbled.
"Elara, this was your idea remember? You asked me to tag along and you can still change your mind if you want to." Adrian said with a slight shrug.
My gaze shifted to Gabriel Cross and he was now leaning on his car, engrossed in a conversation with one of the teachers.
No.
Adrian was right, today was the right time to find something on Gabriel or maybe even better, catch him in the act.
There was no way I was letting my fear for Adrian ruin my plans.
"No, you are right. We should wait in your car so we do not get spotted."
I followed him to his car and slid into the passenger's seat while Adrian remained in the driver's seat.
The car smelt like leather, the silence was awkward as expected.
"You need to learn to trust me Elara. I do not bite, unless you are into that kind of thing." The corner of his lips twitched into a mischievous smirk as he added his last sentence.
If entertaining Adrian's crappy talk was the only way to break the awkward silence then I was willing to take my chances because the silence was suffocating.
"Trust you?" I choked out a hysteric laughter. "You want me to trust you? Can you give me any good reason why I should?" My eyes remained on Gabriel Cross.
"Maybe it is because I have never actually done anything to harm you." Adrian pointed out.
"Yeah well not me but the people I love and that is basically equivalent to hurting me too." I retorted.
Adrian scoffed. "You love Jordan or it is the bond making you think that way?"
I kept quiet and thankfully Adrian did but only for a few minutes.
"So...." He started, turning slightly towards me.
On a second thought, the silence was way better than engaging in a conversation with Adrian.
"Does Jordan know about our little field trip?"
I turned to shoot dagger glares at him. "Do not even think about telling him about any of this."
Adrian raised a brow, clearly amused by my threat. "Okay, okay." He grinned. "Your secret is safe with me."
Just as the awkward silence began to resurface, Gabriel Cross finally stepped into his car.
"Hey, I think he is about to leave." Adrian muttered adjusting his posture on the seat and gripping the steering wheel tight.
We both watched silently, Gabriel started the engine, the roaring noise echoed.
He pulled out of the driveway and began to drive off.
Adrian's foot slammed down on the accelerator immediately Gabriel's car was in motion.
My heart raced fast as the car drove out of the parking lot and into the streets, trailing behind Gabriel Cross.
I could not help but think.
What were we about to uncover?
