Jordan's POV
The police officer made sure we were safe inside before driving off. The moment we stepped foot into the house, the atmosphere became tensed.
Although just like Elara had mentioned before, the house looked untouched from the outside, like nothing had happened but the inside was an entire different story to tell.
Shattered glass still littered on the floor, the bullet holes in the walls, and the memory of what we had survived.
Whoever was behind the attack had cleaned up just enough on the outside to fool the world but not us.
I could feel the unease in my family. No one said it out loud but it was evident in our eyes, we did not feel safe here anymore.
Mum turned to Issac whose face was pale and drained. "You must be hungry." She said softly, ruffling his curly hair and forcing a smile on her face. "I will fix you something warm, okay?"
Then her gaze shifted to Corvin. "Take him upstairs and help him get cleaned up while I cook something for us to eat."
Corvin nodded, he placed a hand over Isaac's shoulder while whispering soothing words to him as they slowly made their way up the stairs.
I trailed mum from behind, escorting her into the kitchen because I did not feel comfortable leaving her in there alone, not after everything that had happened.
While we were in the kitchen, mum did not utter a single word but I could tell how shaken she was. Her hands trembled as she reached for ingredients, too many at once.
The salt dropped from her hand and the oil as well.
The frying pan nearly slipped from her grasp too but my fast reflexes enabled me to catch it just in time.
"Mum." I stepped closer, dropping the frying pan on the kitchen cabinet. "Are you okay?" My tone was laced with genuine concern.
"I am fine." She answered rather too quickly. Her smile was fragile and her voice cracked.
Mum settled down on the kitchen stool, running a hand through her hair in frustration alongside a heavy sigh.
"You do not have to cook anything mum." I said gently. "How about this? We can just order something for everyone to eat." I shrugged.
Thankfully, she nodded her head slowly in defeat. Her shoulders slumped in exhaustion and her head bent low.
"You do not have to pretend. It is okay to feel scared." I leaned close to her. "I am too but we will get through this together, i promise."
Tears formed in her eyes but she bit her lower lip to hold them from falling and her hands reached for mine, squeezing it tight.
"To be honest Jordan, I do not feel safe here at all. I am worried about all of us, Isaac is too young to experience all of this, you all are." Mum exhaled shakily, her voice barely above a whisper.
I rested my back against the kitchen counter with my arms folded, I had to be strong for her so I masked my own unease with a small reassuring smile. "I know but we do not have anywhere else to go."
She looked at me with drooping eyes lids. "We could try to leave town again. I can get another bus ticket."
I shook my head in disagreement. "Running will not solve anything n they will just follow us everywhere we go. Plus we can not keep hiding. Where has hiding gotten us to?"
She went quiet, like she was processing my words so I took it as my queue to continue. "Things are definetly going to align mum. We just need to be patient and i need you to trust me on this one, I will handle it, I promise."
"Why do you sound so confident? Is it because Elara's mum dropped the charges against you so you think she approves of your relationship with Elara?"
I did not answer because not only was I feigning confidence, there was no explanation behind Elara's mum's sudden change in decision, why she had suddenly dropped the charges. Especially with Gabriel Cross around her, feeding her with all sort of things.
They both had been determined to find out my connection with Elara so why did they stop?
That alone made me feel worried, like they were plotting something bigger.
"Mum, just go upstairs and get some rest. I will order pizza for Corvin and Isaac. After your nap, you can have some too."
"Thank you Jordan." Mum gave me a grateful smile as she stood slowly.
I watched her walk away before pulling out my phone. The order did not take long, withing some minutes, it arrived.
We ate together, the three of us. I cracked dumb jokes to lighten up the atmosphere, teased Corvin about his messy hair and helped Isaac pick out mushrooms from his pizza.
For a while, we all laughed and forgot about our worries until Corvin asked. "Are you seriously considering going back to school tomorrow? After being arrested in front of everyone?" He nudged me.
I shrugged. "Do I look like I care?"
I did not. My mind only anticipated meeting one person tomorrow and that was Elara.
Once it was nightfall, mum came down for dinner and went back to sleep afterwards. The boys were asleep too but I could not rest.
Every single noise made me feel alerted, like a signal or a warning.
What if the hunters came back?
What if next time, we would not be lucky to run?
Slipping out the front door, the night air did justice to the heat dwelling inside of me.
My eyes scanned the surroundings hoping to find anything that the hunters could have accidentally left behind.
There was nothing.
As I turned to head back inside, a sudden force slammed into my back, knocking me to the hard floor.
Before I could process anything, a hand yanked me up by the collar.
"You!" An annoying masculine voice growled.
I raised my head up to gaze at Adrian's furious face.
"You lured the hunters out!"
