The Rejection
The freezing wind howled through the courtyard of the Blood Moon Pack, but the bitter chill was nothing compared to the ice in Alpha Kael’s golden eyes.
Today was my eighteenth birthday.
The day every werewolf dreamed of.
The day the Moon Goddess finally revealed your fated mate.
For eighteen agonizing years, I had scrubbed the packhouse floors until my hands were raw and my knees bled. I had endured vicious kicks, cruel words, and leftover scraps, surviving on a single fragile hope.
Today would be the day I found my mate.
The day someone would finally love me.
I never imagined my fated mate would be my greatest tormentor.
I stood in the center of the massive stone courtyard, wearing a thin, oversized gray T-shirt that offered no protection against the biting cold. The entire pack surrounded me, their faces filled with the same disgust and mockery I had known all my life.
But my eyes remained fixed on Kael.
He stood on the elevated stone steps, looking every bit like the devastatingly handsome future Alpha he had been born to become. His broad shoulders were tense, his jaw clenched with fury.
The mate bond between us had snapped into place the exact second the clock struck midnight.
I had felt it.
A warm, beautiful golden thread had connected our souls, pulling my heart toward his.
For exactly one minute, I thought I was saved.
Then Selene wrapped her arms around his waist.
My step-sister.
The girl who had made my life a living hell ever since my mother died.
She wore a luxurious white fur coat, her red lips curling into a wicked smile as she deliberately pressed herself against him.
“Get this pathetic creature out of my sight,” Kael snarled.
His deep voice echoed through the stone courtyard.
The invisible golden thread between us violently vibrated, sending a sharp ache through my chest.
“Kael...” I whispered, my voice trembling. “We’re mates. The Goddess chose us.”
Selene laughed.
“The Goddess made a mistake, you filthy rat. Do you honestly think an Alpha would ever mate with a wolf-less Omega?”
Her eyes swept over me with pure contempt.
“You can’t even shift. You’re a genetic dead end.”
The surrounding pack erupted into cruel laughter.
Their voices blended with the howling wind, striking me from every direction.
I looked at Kael, desperately searching his golden eyes for even a trace of conflict.
Or pity.
There was none.
Only cold disgust.
“I am the future Alpha of the Blood Moon Pack,” Kael declared.
His Alpha command slammed into my chest, forcing me onto my knees in the freezing snow.
“I need a strong Luna to lead beside me. Someone with power, grace, and a fierce wolf.”
He descended the steps slowly.
“Not a weak, broken maid.”
He stopped directly in front of me, towering over my kneeling body.
His intoxicating scent of sandalwood and rain washed over me.
It should have comforted me.
Instead, it shattered my heart.
My inner wolf—if I even had one—remained completely silent.
Kael looked down at me with pure venom.
“I, Alpha Kael of the Blood Moon Pack, reject you, Elara, as my mate and Luna.”
The words struck me like an executioner’s blade.
A blood-curdling scream tore from my throat as the golden mate bond shattered.
It didn’t simply break.
It exploded.
Pain ripped through my chest as if Kael had reached inside me with razor-sharp claws and torn my heart apart.
I collapsed into the snow, my forehead hitting the frozen ground.
My entire body convulsed.
I couldn’t breathe.
My lungs simply refused to function.
“Accept the rejection,” Kael commanded coldly.
“No...” I gasped.
Hot tears streamed down my freezing face.
“Please, Kael... it’ll kill me.”
“Accept it!”
His Alpha aura crushed down on me, making every breath feel impossible.
“I... I, Elara...” I choked.
Every word felt like swallowing broken glass.
“Accept your rejection.”
The final thread snapped.
The bond disappeared.
And the emptiness inside my chest expanded.
Cold.
Hollow.
Endless.
It felt worse than death.
Kael didn’t even flinch.
He turned his back on me and walked toward Selene.
She immediately wrapped her arms around him and kissed his cheek before looking at me with pure triumph.
“Alpha.”
General Marcus stepped forward.
“What do we do with her? Her presence is an insult to your new Luna.”
Kael didn’t look back.
“Banish her.”
The cruel words echoed through the silent courtyard.
“Throw her into the Dark Woods,” he ordered. “Let the rogues deal with her.”
He paused.
“If she somehow survives the night, she is never to set foot in Blood Moon territory again.”
Panic finally cut through the agony.
The Dark Woods weren’t simply a forest.
They were a death sentence.
Feral rogues lived there—creatures known for torturing their victims before tearing them apart.
Before I could beg for mercy, two massive guards seized my arms and dragged me toward the iron gates.
“No! Please!”
I struggled weakly against their grips.
“Selene! Please!”
She only laughed, resting her head against Kael’s shoulder.
The guards dragged me across the snow until we reached the territory line.
The pitch-black treeline of the Dark Woods loomed ahead.
The air smelled of rotting meat and despair.
Without a word, the guards threw me forward.
I crashed onto the frozen earth, scraping my hands and knees.
Behind me, the massive iron gates slammed shut.
The metallic clang echoed through the forest.
I was completely alone.
Broken.
Rejected.
Left to die.
Slowly, I forced myself to sit up.
My entire body shook beneath my thin shirt. The freezing wind sliced through my skin like tiny knives.
I stared into the darkness.
I waited for death.
But then something strange happened.
The agonizing pain in my chest began to change.
The hollow void left by Kael’s rejection was slowly filling with something else.
Heat.
Strange.
Thrumming.
Alive.
It began deep inside my blood, spreading through my veins despite the freezing cold around me.
My breath caught.
What was happening?
Then—
A low, terrifying growl rolled through the darkness.
I froze.
Three pairs of glowing red eyes appeared between the trees.
Feral rogues.
Massive bodies emerged from the shadows, their claws digging into the frozen earth. Thick saliva dripped from their jaws as they caught my scent.
Their eyes locked onto me.
I was prey.
I closed my eyes.
There was nowhere to run.
Nowhere to hide.
So I waited for the end.
But then a voice echoed through the deepest reaches of my mind.
Ancient.
Feminine.
And carrying a power so immense that it seemed to shake the very earth beneath me.
Get up, little one.
The heat inside my blood suddenly surged.
We do not die today.
