*This is just explaining the rules of the world; it's pretty short and not too important. Of course, all the important information here will be weaved in at some point, but besides that, it's some random things about shifting and being a shifter.
Hey, seeing as this will be a long walk, why don't I tell you about my powers? No? Oh well, you're going to listen anyways.
Most mothers shift into a wolf feeling better about it but only in the first signs; if too late, it will be dangerous to the pups. You are born a wolf when your mom is in the form of a wolf - but you shift back right after the birth. So some wolves shift for the second time when they turn eighteen.
You can also shift before your eighteenth birthday in cases of extreme distress, though extremely rare. I am the odd case of both. I had my second shift the day my mom left due to my dad's cheating and blamed me for it. No one heard the silent screams of the four-year-old girl shifting alone into a wolf.
Now hurt and abused, I decided enough was enough as they pushed my boundaries, and I hit rock bottom. However, I would not be a victim of learned helplessness as I know I have the strength to carve a way out even when it feels like there is none. My abusers only have power over me because of isolation, and, in my case, I can change that since they believe that I would always be a well-trained puppet and wouldn't contact other packs when left alone.
So like I said, I am a part of the Sin Race; there are two categories, "angel" and "devil." You are born in the form your maternal parent is in (i.e., wolf, human, fae, wyvern, etc.) as a protection method, so they recognize you as theirs. And you get your classification the day you officially shift, a.k.a. your eighteenth birthday.
Though throughout childhood, things are apparent in order to tell the classifications. And if you pay attention to the name, it's kind of obvious; angels needed to be surrounded by love, and devils needed only to be hated or ignored. No one really knows how the determination happens, but it is based on what we can observe. And there are exemptions; rumors have it that they are a quadruplet that was loved by all but when shifting turned into the devil category.
Another difference between the categories is how their powers manifest. Angels call upon the light, and Devils call upon the darkness. Basically, as an Angel, you can light bend, and as a Devil, you can shadow bend. And in the same as long as there is some sort of light, Angels have strength, but in complete darkness, they are powerless. That's what makes Devils so powerful, and there is rarely ever no darkness because they can create shadows using their own body wherever light shines.
But always note that being an Angel does not make you good, and being a Devil does not make you bad. You arise as one or the other from your environment, not your inner self.
So a Sin is just someone who is a mix of the big seven species. They are the Fairy-Tales, the Lycans (a.k.a. werewolves), Night-Walkers (a.k.a. vampires), Elementals (a.k.a. witches), Fairies, Mermaids, and Trolls.
The other two species being known as Humans and Sins. And to be a Sin, you cannot have human blood.
If you are curious who my Fairy-Tale family is, it's Frankenstein's Monster, Abominable Snowman, Loch Ness, Babel the Blue Ox, Mother Goose, Easter Bunny, Santa, Tooth Fairy, and Jack Frost. Once I officially shift, I will be able to turn into their copies. Copies being my body's version of them.
Fairy-Tales cannot have kids, but the gods place them within familial groups to support their transition and acceptance. They are created after an accident happens, and humans create folk-lore about them. Sadly movies and shows don't count.
Devils are extremely rare because once discovered, they are often killed before their powers fully set in, and even then, when someone has a Sin, they tend to love them whether out of selfish want of power or of true care meaning they become Angels.
In this world currently, there are only four Devils known currently- and I may be one of them. The four of them are the quadruplet alphas of death. They are known to kill plunder and anyone who is not a part of their pack in an attempt to become the royalty of the supernatural.
