Chapter One: The Girl Behind the Mask
The city lights glowed like stars trapped behind glass. From the rooftop, Ava Montgomery watched the world move below her. Fast cars, loud music, people pretending their lives were perfect. She knew that feeling well. Pretending was something she had learned to do perfectly. By day, she was the spoiled heiress everyone envied. By night, she was the woman no one could ever catch. The papers called her The Night Fox, the mysterious vigilante who stole secrets, not jewels. Ava smiled under her black mask. Her next target was only a few floors below. She crouched near the edge, her dark clothes blending with the shadows. The wind was sharp, but it made her feel alive. She checked her watch. It was midnight exactly. “Ready?” a voice whispered in her earpiece. It was Nina, her best friend and tech genius. “Security cameras are looping for five minutes. You’re clear to go, princess.” Ava rolled her eyes. “Don’t call me that.” Nina laughed softly. “You are one. A very sneaky one.” Ava cut the line and jumped from the ledge. The rope caught her weight, swinging her softly toward the tall window of Kane Enterprises. Inside, the office was dark, quiet, and elegant. Ava moved like a shadow, careful not to make a sound. Her goal was simple. Copy the files from the main computer. Those files could expose another dirty deal linked to her father’s company. Her father, Richard Montgomery, liked to call himself a man of honor. But Ava knew better. She had seen too much. The USB drive clicked into place. The computer screen lit up with rows of secret numbers and contracts. Ava smiled. “Got it.” She almost turned to leave when a voice spoke behind her. “Stealing at midnight? That’s bad manners, Miss Fox.” Ava froze. The lights came on, flooding the office in gold. A man stood near the doorway. Tall, calm, and confident. His eyes caught the light, cold gray, watching her closely. He wasn’t afraid. He wasn’t even angry. He looked curious. Her heart raced. No one was supposed to be here. “Who are you?” he asked. Ava didn’t answer. She couldn’t risk revealing her voice. Instead, she tilted her head and gave him a half-smile behind her mask. “You’re not much of a talker,” he said. “That’s fine. I prefer silence.” He walked closer, slow and steady. Every step made her pulse louder. She took a step back, ready to run. He noticed. “You can go,” he said softly. “But next time you break into my office, at least bring me coffee.” Ava blinked. “Your office?” He smiled faintly. “Leo Kane. CEO.” Her stomach dropped. The man she was stealing from wasn’t a random target. He was the one man she had sworn to avoid. She whispered under her breath, “Perfect.” He raised an eyebrow. “What was that?” “Nothing,” she said quickly, forcing calm into her voice. Leo’s eyes studied her mask. “I could call security,” he said, “but I won’t.” Ava frowned. “Why not?” “Because I’m curious,” he said. “You risked a lot to come here. That means you want something more than money.” He was right. She wanted the truth and revenge. But he didn’t need to know that. She smiled through the mask. “Curiosity can be dangerous, Mr. Kane.” “So can silence,” he said. “And yet, we both enjoy it.” The air between them felt heavy, sharp, and electric. Then his phone rang. He glanced at it, his expression changing. Ava took her chance. In one quick move, she unplugged her USB, jumped onto the window ledge, and looked back at him. “See you around,” she said. He gave a small smile. “I’m counting on it.” She leaped into the night. The city wind caught her hair as she swung down to the next building. Her heart raced, half from fear, half from something else. Excitement. By the time she reached her car, Nina was already waiting. “Well?” Nina asked. Ava pulled off her mask and smiled. “Got the files.” “And?” Ava hesitated, still thinking about those gray eyes. “And I met him,” she said quietly. “Who?” “Leo Kane.” Nina nearly dropped her tablet. “You’re kidding. The billionaire?” Ava nodded. “He caught me. But he let me go.” Nina’s eyes widened. “You think he knows who you are?” Ava looked out the car window, watching the tower lights fade into the night. “I don’t think so,” she said. “But he’ll remember me.” The next morning, Ava was no longer the masked vigilante. She was the perfect daughter again. Flawless dress, perfect hair, fake smile. At breakfast, her father read the newspaper aloud. “Another thief in the city,” he said. “These people have no respect for power.” Ava sipped her coffee. “Maybe they have a reason.” Her father looked up. “What did you say?” “Nothing,” she replied, smiling sweetly. Her mother, Margaret, gave her a sharp look. “Ava, darling, remember tonight’s gala. The Kane family will be there. Be polite.” Ava froze. “The Kane family?” “Yes,” her mother said. “You’ll meet Leo Kane. He’s quite the businessman.” Ava’s spoon clinked against her cup. Her mind raced. She had already met him. Just not as Ava Montgomery. That night, the ballroom glittered with gold and glass. Ava walked in, her head high, her smile perfect. She was the image of grace. Then she saw him. Leo Kane. The same gray eyes, now staring at her from across the room. He looked surprised, but only for a second. Then his lips curved into that same faint, knowing smile. Ava felt her pulse quicken. She whispered softly, “This should be interesting.”
