. . . . . . (late June)
"Spill it. NOW." She blinked at me innocently until I growled lowly at her. She rolled her eyes and flopped into a chair, sighing.
"Like I said, you two were LOUD." She grinned at me. "It was awkward, so I made a joke that you two sounded like a pair of wild animals. Bryce actually sprayed soda out his nose. He laughed about it, but then I heard him say his nose was ruined. I said it looked fine, and he complained it would be a week before the smell would go away. I told him you used to say the same thing every time I asked you to smell perfume, but you don't do that much anymore." She paused and bit her lip nervously. I felt like passing out again.
"I think his nose was still distracting him, because he said, 'She must have lost her senses when she lost her wolf'." I wanted to die. I wanted to kill Bryce. I've spent nineteen years lying to my best friend because of Wolf's law, and he dropped the bomb because of some soda in his nose. She laughed at me suddenly.
"He made that face too. I thought he was going to have a stroke." I looked at her in confusion and she laughed again. "He made that face when I agreed with him."
"B-but... I-i mean..." She bounded out of the chair and hugged me again.
"I've known for YEARS. I also know that I'm not SUPPOSED to know, so I just pretend I don't see or hear all the crazy shït. I've been your best friend since kindergarten and I spent most of my time hanging out at your house. I think over the years everyone just sort of FORGOT I wasn't one of you. But I didn't want anyone to get in trouble, so I pretended." She shrugged and laughed.
"Your pack was so used to me, I attended the Alpha ceremony with you when we were fourteen. Actually, my whole family got invited." I gaped at her. She smiled comfortingly. "It's okay, they DON'T know. I got the mail that day and destroyed their invitations. But I went. I couldn't help it, and it was the most amazing thing I have ever seen." Her eyes sparkled at the memory, and she smiled.
"If I hadn't known before then, I think I might have been scared and ruined it, but it was like watching my bedtime stories come to life around me." She blushed. "I actually hoped I would get a wolf when I turned sixteen too, even though I knew it wasn't possible."
"You could have told ME..." I trailed off, I knew she really couldn't have; she was right, my whole pack would have gotten in trouble for breaking wolf law. I laughed suddenly and Lilian looked at me sharply. "Sorry, sorry, I just thought about how mad the Elders would have been trying to figure out who was the first offender."
"They are just as guilty, actually." I choked.
"WHAT?"
"Yeah, I was standing right there when they were talking to your parents about how the 'Moon Goddess lost Sinah from her sight, and her wolf has been sent to reincarnate'." I felt like my mouth had been gaping for hours.
"but... your scent.. should..." She grinned mischievously.
"Sinah, I'm fairly sure at least two thirds of my clothing is actually your clothing, we are always together, and we look and act like sisters. I just assume I smell like you all the time. They don't notice me anymore."
"You know, we really SHOULD tell the Elders..." She laughed suddenly.
"We are. After I explained to Bryce, I guess he figured it was okay to stop pretending, because he just flipped his phone out and asked me for your Alpha's number. So, I gave him Mr. Jackson's number and he told me to pack enough clothes for a couple of weeks, because we are moving to his pack, and it would be easier if we didn't have to buy new clothes right away. Other than dresses..."
"Wait, what?" She rolled her eyes and pointed to the luggage next to the door I had not noticed. "But... Wait, what about you and Kyle?" She smiled and picked the bags up to take outside. I followed her in a daze.
"Sinah, if you think I'm going to miss what is basically my best friend's wedding, you have another think coming." She glared at nothing in particular and stared at me with more resolve than I had ever seen out of her. "I'll fight a werewolf to be your maid of honor. Don't think I won't." Aiden's soft chuckle reached us, he'd caught Bryce at some point, and because of his lack of reaction to her statement, I assumed Bryce had explained the situation to him.
"That's one of the reasons she's coming with us, because I believe her." Bryce grinned at us as a giant black SUV pulled into the parking lot and he took our bags from Lilian. I raised my arms to Aiden so he could pick me up and Lilian could fold up my chair.
"So, what is the other reason?"
"I want to ask your Elders if I am technically bound by wolf law, since I figured it out on my own, and I'm not a werewolf. I want to tell Kyle, so I don't have to choose between my bestie and my beau." Lilian shrugged and waved to the driver; he was a friend of hers. I realized most of her friends were wolves, she really did blend in with us incredibly well. "I think he'll be cool with it and be willing to move there with us to your new pack. Hey Ray!" The driver was staring at her like she'd grown a second head, making her laugh.
"Years ago, Ray. Now come on, don't we have things we need to be doing?"
I stared at my best friend in bewilderment.
"You okay, love?" Aiden's voice was soft, and I turned to face him with a smile as he handed me to Bryce inside the SUV, climbing in behind us.
"I'm fine, someone just threw everything I knew about my life in a blender and pushed 'frappe'." Aiden hummed in amusement and Lilian clapped.
"Oh, good idea! Ray, frappes first, rock the werewolf boat second."
The whole vehicle burst into laughter.
