Happy Birthday
May 19 started like any other day, my alarm went off like usual, I got up got ready and headed downstairs to try and find something to eat for breakfast before my very last day of highschool. As I came into the kitchen I realized it wasn’t just any old day, “happy birthday kiddo” said a familiar voice, I was caught off guard by someone being home and awake at such an hour, but there in the kitchen stood my big brother,Logan. I nearly burst into tears at the sight of him standing there like the good old days, he had moved to the city going on three years ago, and it’d been well over a year since the last time he visited because of a fight with one of my mothers many boyfriends, but we talked on the phone pretty much everyday. “What are you doing here!” I exclaimed while throwing myself around him in the biggest hug of my life, “I figured if I wasn’t here to say it then you might not get a happy birthday before school and that seemed shitty” he paused but then continued “plus.. we figured you’d need help packing.” He smiled big and bright “we? Packing for what? What are you talking about?” I asked in pure confusion “We as in him and me, and packing to get you out of shitville” said another voice that I recognized without even looking, it made butterflies appear in my stomach. It was my brothers best friend, and roommate, Ashton Grim. He was my brothers best friend growing up and when they graduated they both took off together and got an apartment in the city. “Oh hey Ash I didn’t see you there” I said smiling trying my hardest not to blush, I then noticed the time on the stove behind Logan, “s**t thank you both for coming but I have to go or I’ll be late on my last day of school, I love you will you be here when I get out of school?” I said grabbing my bag and jacket off the chair in the doorway “let me drive you, and yea that when we are packing silly” he said pulling his keys from his coat pocket and Ash stood up on cue. “Packing for what I asked again” still just as confused as before as we all started walking towards the front door “I told you we were getting you out of shitville” Ash said with a chuckle “and taking me where exactly?” I asked as I climbed into the backseat strait to the middle so I could lean up front and talk without feeling isolated in the back seat. “Home” he said cocky as ever and Logan just laughed, “we got a bigger place so you can have your own room!” He added, then it hit me and I couldn’t even play it cool “I’m moving into the city with you guys?!” I nearly screamed with excitement “ only if you want to, if you want to stay here that’s fine too” Logan said with sarcasm evident in his voice. Ash laughed at that sentence as we pulled up to Spencerville Highschool, I got out thanked them for the ride and started towards the building. But now my head was racing with thoughts, little ole me in the big city, an apartment with my brother so I could go back to seeing him every day and being a family again, finally getting out of my mothers house, how cute Ash was. My guilty pleasure was that since I was about 9years old I had the biggest crush on Ash, problem was so did everyone else, when him and Logan were still in school they were star football players and had girls worshiping them at their feet so why would he pay attention to a younger nerdy girl like me. Plus he had known me for so long it’d have been weird if he found out I had a crush on him. School flew by thankfully, and when the final bell rang, I walked out to the grin and they were parked and waiting for me in the pickup line, I nearly dove into the backseat and Logan sped off towards home. As we walked in I could tell my mom was losing her mind not being in control. Logan and Ash loaded all my clothes into the bed of the little red truck they had driven down here, luckily it all fit in one trip so we loaded up and I looked at my mom, wondering if I should say anything or just let that hurt live in the past for both of us, and move on from it. “I love you mom” I said barely louder then a whisper, but she shut the door in my face, and I know she heard me because she hesitated and then let the door finish closing. We all climbed in the front of the truck and took off down the road towards my new start.
