Ella Monroe sat at her small, cluttered desk, the warm, flickering light of her desk lamp. The soft hum of her laptop and the rustle of pages as she flipped through her textbooks were the only sounds in the otherwise quiet room.
Her room was modest, adorned with faded posters and a few personal mementos that gave it a semblance of comfort. Yet, despite the efforts she made to focus on her studies, her mind kept drifting back to the meeting she had had with Damien Sinclair and Adrian Marquez.
The offer they had presented was overwhelming. The prospect of solving her financial woes in one fell swoop was almost too good to be true. But the very nature of the offer, to pretend to be someone's wife for a business deal, felt deeply unsettling.
She had tried to push the thought from her mind, but now, with her mother's health taking a turn for the worse, the urgency of the situation brought the offer back to the forefront of her thoughts.
Her phone buzzed, breaking the silence of her room. The screen displayed her father's name, and her heart sank as she answered the call. "Hi, Dad. What's up?"
"Ella," her father's voice was strained, and there was an edge of desperation in his tone. "I'm sorry to bother you, but we've got a problem. Your mother's condition has worsened. The doctors say she needs immediate surgery, but we're short on the funds."
Ella's stomach churned at the news. She had been dreading this call, yet she had hoped that somehow they would find a way.
The mounting medical bills had already placed a heavy burden on her family, and the prospect of adding a major surgery to that was almost too much to bear."How much do we need?" Ella asked. Her parents were at province and she was working and studying in Manila to provide for her family.
"It's a substantial amount," her father replied, his voice barely above a whisper. "Around 250,000 pesos. We've already exhausted all other options. I don't know what to do."
The number hit Ella like a physical blow. Her current debts, combined with the cost of the surgery, seemed insurmountable. She had been doing her best to manage her finances, working long hours at The Ivory Spoon and cutting back on every possible expense. But despite her best efforts, the financial gap was too wide. It was very difficult to be a poor.
Ella glanced at the business card Adrian had given her. The card had felt like a lifeline at the time, an offer that seemed almost too good to be true.
Now, with her mother's health in jeopardy, it seemed like a more viable solution than ever before. She took a deep breath, her hands trembling as she dialed the number on the card.
The phone rang several times before Adrian Marquez answered. "Hello, Adrian Marquez speaking," came his calm and professional voice on the other end of the line.
"It's Ella Monroe," she said, trying to keep her voice steady despite her anxiety. "I'm calling about the offer you made."
"Ella," Adrian's tone softened slightly. "I'm glad you called. What can I do for you?"
"I... I need to discuss the offer. My situation has become more urgent. My mother needs surgery, and we're short on funds."
"I see," Adrian said, his voice taking on a more serious tone. "This is a critical situation. I can offer you more than we initially discussed. How does 250 million pesos sound?"
Ella's breath caught in her throat. The increased amount was substantial and could cover not only her mother's surgery but also provide some much-needed breathing room for her finances. It was an offer that could change her life, but the terms of the deal were still daunting.
"That's... that's a lot," she said, struggling to grasp the magnitude of the offer. "But what about the terms? You mentioned a contract."
"Yes, there will be a contract," Adrian explained. "The arrangement would be for six months. During this period, you would need to fulfill the role of my—Damien Sinclair's—wife. This would involve living in his penthouse and maintaining the pretense for the duration of the contract."
Ella's mind raced as she absorbed the details. The penthouse, the role, and the contract were all significant elements of the deal. It was more than just a financial offer—it was a commitment that would intertwine her life with Damien Sinclair's for an extended period.
"Ella, let me explain why this arrangement is necessary. The Montelucia royal family is very traditional and values appearances highly. They have strict cultural norms and expectations, especially when it comes to their business dealings. For this major deal to go through, Damien needs to present himself in a way that aligns with their values."
Ella pressed her cellphone against her left ear. "And what does that have to do with me playing his wife?"
"Everything. In Montelucian society, a man without a wife is seen as unstable and untrustworthy. To them, having a wife is a mark of respectability and stability. It's not just about having someone by his side; it's about projecting an image that meets their cultural expectations."
He continued, "Damien's role in this deal is to be a representative of stability and respectability. The Montelucian royal family needs to see him as someone who can be trusted to uphold their values. By having a wife, Damien can fulfill this requirement and ensure that the deal proceeds smoothly."
Ella took a deep breath. "So, you're saying this is about fulfilling a cultural expectation to make the deal happen?"
"Exactly," Adrian confirmed. "The role isn't just a formality—it's a strategic move to align with the Montelucian royal family's expectations. Your presence as his wife is important for portraying the image they want to see. It's a key part of the negotiation process."
"Could we meet to discuss this further?" Ella asked.
"Certainly," Adrian replied. "I suggest we meet tomorrow morning. I'll send you the details of the meeting location. It's important we finalize everything before moving forward."
"Alright," Ella said, her heart pounding. "I'll be there. I'd prefer to meet with you alone, though. I'm a bit intimidated by your boss, Damien."
Adrian chuckled on the other end of the line. "Intimidated by Damien? He's handsome but not as scary as he might seem."
"Bye," Ella said, ending the call.
