Eyes

As the sun rises over the forest I make my way deeper into it. I was one of the last remaining humans in this world. After the fall of mankind other races began to appear and chased the remaining humans away, some claiming that because of us they were hidden for centuries. I'm not sure what to believe but for as long as I can remember I lived in a cabin hidden deep in the woods behind a once prosperous city. It was a small cabin with just my mother and I. I had never known my father but my mother told me that he gave his life saving her from the new races that appeared. Little did either of them know at the time but she was pregnant with me. I lived life with my mother for 17 years of my life before we were discovered and attacked. She pushed me out the back door and locked it behind me so I couldn't get back in yelling to run as fast as I could and find a place to hide. I did as told and hid for several hours before I returned to find my little cabin in the woods destroyed and my mother missing. While I was looking around the ruins of my home I found strips of my mothers clothes and blood. I could only assume she had been killed. Since that day over a year ago I have been wondering around the woods, traveling the open land of the plains at night going from forest to forest. Hiding as my mother instructed to. It was what my life had become and I had gotten used to it by now. I considered days like today ordinary. I would hide in the forest and collect what I could for food and fill what I little I had to hold water with up in the streams and rivers that I came across. By night I would travel out of the woods and into new territories or resting when I could in caves or deep in the forest where I couldn't be smelled by those with strong senses of smell. It had started to get dark and I had been traveling through the forest for most of the day. I stopped by the river I had been following for months now and filled my water when I felt it. Someone or something was near and it was watching me. This wasn't the first time I had felt this presence but I wanted to make sure it was my last. Standing I looked around in the dim light trying to figure out where whatever it was, was watching me from. I stared into the forest for what felt like an hour but nothing showed up and soon after the feeling went away. "ugh." I grumbled to myself and I soon became irritated by the constant feeling of being watched. Traveling upstream I found a place where the water became shallow and crossed to the other side, hoping to get away from where I had previously been.
