Prologue
When waking up in a hot climate, the first thing that registers is the humidity, especially since we are in tents in the middle of the Libya desert. We have permission from the Libyan government to be here but it's a hush hush operation as the country is still affected by conflict, it is currently not a safe country to be in, especially for easterners. It's such a beautiful place that it's almost a shame about the fighting, with the sand as far as the eye can see and the flat terrain but it's peaceful, just you and nature, you almost forget it's a conflicted country. We have armed guards 24/7 and had to dig our own ditches when we first arrived, to place our tents so they are harder to spot from land or air. We cannot go anywhere without a guard, even to pee which is OK with me a bit awkward but since I don't want to be kidnapped and held for ransom, I’m happy with the arrangement.
Our homebase is at a distance from the pyramid that we are working on, so that anyone who finds out about the operation cannot find us while we sleep because obviously we would want to be near so it would be easier but at the same time it would also be easier to find us.
My name is Dr. Amelia Adam's I am a archaeologist who was hired by the Egyptian and Libyan government, who have teamed up and brought us out, to discover this small but equally fascinating pyramid. We have been detailing the structure for the past month but we have only recently found an entrance so for the first time since discovering the actual pyramid I am excited to come to work today. So I get up and wear my uniform which is a khaki cotton pants and cream loose cotton shirt with hiking boots and my hair in a messy bun with a Alchemi Labs Desert Hat covering my head. We grab our cheese and tomato sandwiches and a bottle of water and climb into the vehicles and get ready to start the day.
We travel by Toyota land cruiser to the work site and I am thankful as it's a extremely dusty and bumpy ride, oh did I mention the air- conditioner works? Yes miracles do happen. We are all stationed at the entrance read to open those when my satellite phone rings, just as they get a wedge in the crease. With a bit of irritation I step away to answer but look back
just as a creaking noise is released from the door the pyramid, a mist is released from the
entrance. I think nothing of it as I'm sure lots of dust built up over the years and opening the
door just allows the dust to escape. We take pictures and start detailing the entrance and
discover how the mechanisms work hoping to give us an idea of the builders which takes the
whole day, it's not as exciting as Indiana Jones makes it look, but it's still an interesting career to have. We travel back to camp in the vehicles, finally getting relief from the constant heat but the difference from this morning and previous days travel is a excited atmosphere about our discovery but at this moment I'm in desperate need of a shower.
I'm awaken in the middle of the night with sounds of activity, I grab my jacket as I climb
out of my cot to investigate, people all around camp are starting to get sick, like physically sick and are running a high fever then just collapsing into a deep sleep almost in a coma
state. I run back into my tent and get dressed, leaving my hat as it's still dark and run to find
the camp supervisor Almed Salm, he's already on the radios trying to get orders. When the
communication comes through, and we are ordered to break camp immediately to come home.
We are evacuated the very next day.
