A Mother's Love

I felt a sudden chill taking over my body, causing me to awaken abruptly. I listened and looked slowly around the room ,waiting for my eyes to adjust to the total darkness. The room was remarkably cold for an early October night, so I carefully got out of bed and went to start a fire in the wood stove. Yawning, I hurried over to the back door to bring in a stack of wood. When I opened the door, I was speechless. There was at least a foot of snow on the ground and lying in the snow at my feet was a tiny wolf pup. It looked frozen solid and I saw no sign of life from the tiny body. I had never seen a wolf pup in our area before, and this one was most unusual. It was solid white, appearing almost like an artic fox, except for a small black spot on the front paw. I bent down and carefully lifted the cold and limp pup, holding it close to my body while I started to cry. The poor thing had frozen to death, all alone. I grabbed a few sticks with my other hand and carried them inside to start the fire. I pulled up my old rocking chair and sat with the pup on my chest, rocking slowly back and forth until I cried myself to sleep...     I was running through the woods at fast as my paws would carry me. As I ran, the woods became darker and darker, colder and colder. It was snowing so fast that I could not see more than a few feet in front of me. I was being chased by a large pack of were-wolves and they would soon catch up with me. You cannot escape us, they howled in unison. At that moment I tripped and fell, and everything became dark. When I opened my eyes I could see that I was in a clearing in the woods, surrounded by a pack of at least 50 large wolves. Most were still in their wolf forms except for one, who was obviously the alpha. He stood over me with his foot on my chest, staring at me with his pitch black eyes that matched his hair and his clothes. Where is  she, he growled. I, I don't know what you are talking about, I responded, matching his stare. Tell me now and I will make your death quick, he sneered.      "ENOUGH" said a low and booming voice from out of view. Everyone gasped as a large white wolf strode confidently in to view. It was the biggest wolf any of us had ever seen, in fact we had only heard legends of the white wolf... All of the wolves except the alpha instinctively cowered and laid down on the ground, lowering their heads. The alpha however, did not remove his foot from my chest. The alpha flatly responded to the white wolf while still staring at me "you are too late". In an instant, the alpha and half his pack turned into a puff of smoke, disappearing forever. The rest ran as fast as they could. The white wolf came and sat next to me. "Are you ok?" He asked. W-What just happened? I mumbled. The wolf touched me with his paw and I was suddenly warm, healed, and sitting next to him in my human form. He looked at me reassuringly, with his dark brown eyes seeming to see through my soul. "They are looking for my daughter, for they fear how powerful she may become. You must keep her safe until the time has come that she is ready to meet her destiny. Do not let anyone know who she really is. I have searched for you for a thousand years. I know that only you can love her enough"     I opened my eyes, feeling a sense of calm and warmth throughout my body. I looked instinctively to my chest, expecting that this had all just been a dream. Instead, lying in my arms was a tiny and pale newborn girl, staring at me with her ice blue eyes.
