Five years one goodbye

The late August sun shone brightly over the sprawling campus of Pacific State University in San Diego, California. Thousands of freshmen moved across the grounds carrying suitcases, backpacks, and dreams bigger than themselves. For eighteen-year-old Ethan Walker, it felt like the beginning of a new life. He stood near the Engineering Building, clutching a campus map in one hand and a worn backpack in the other. His dark hair was slightly messy from the long bus ride from Arizona, and his face carried the mixture of excitement and nervousness common among first-year students. Unlike many students arriving in expensive cars driven by proud parents, Ethan had traveled alone. His father worked as a truck driver while his mother managed a small grocery store. They had spent years saving money to help him attend college. Even with scholarships, finances would be tight. But Ethan didn’t care. He had worked too hard to get here. Since childhood, he had dreamed of becoming an engineer. Now that dream was finally beginning. As he studied the map, trying to locate his orientation hall, a sudden gust of wind swept through the courtyard. Several papers flew from a student’s hands. “Seriously?” a female voice exclaimed. The papers scattered everywhere. Without thinking, Ethan rushed forward. A few other students walked past without stopping, but Ethan bent down and began gathering the sheets before they could disappear across campus. When he looked up, he found himself staring into the most beautiful eyes he had ever seen. The girl looked about his age. She had long brown hair, a bright smile, and an expression that somehow managed to be both confident and warm at the same time. Thank you, she said, taking the papers from him. No problem. She laughed. “You saved my entire semester before it even started.” Ethan smiled. “I’m Ethan.” “Sophia Bennett.” For a brief moment, neither of them moved. Then they both laughed awkwardly. Freshman year was already off to an unusual start. “Engineering?” Sophia asked after noticing the logo on his orientation folder. “Mechanical Engineering.” Her eyes widened. No way. Me too. Seriously? Seriously. What are the chances? Sophia grinned. “I guess we’re going to be classmates.” Neither of them knew it then, but that simple conversation would change both of their lives. The following weeks passed quickly. Engineering turned out to be even harder than Ethan had imagined. The lectures were intense. The assignments seemed endless. The professors expected excellence. Many students struggled to keep up. Fortunately, Ethan and Sophia often found themselves in the same classes. They started sitting together during lectures. Then they began studying together. Soon they were spending several hours a day around each other. Sophia came from a wealthy family in Los Angeles. Her father owned several construction companies, while her mother managed a successful interior design business. Unlike Ethan, she had never worried about paying for food or textbooks. But despite her privileged background, Sophia wasn’t arrogant. She treated everyone with kindness. Especially Ethan. One afternoon, after a particularly exhausting engineering lab, Ethan sat alone outside the library. His stomach growled loudly. He checked his wallet. Eight dollars That was all he had left until the following week. He sighed. The money needed to last. Lunch would have to wait. As he prepared to head back to his dormitory, Sophia appeared carrying two paper bags from a nearby cafe. “Perfect timing,” she said. Ethan looked confused. “For what?” “I accidentally bought too much food.” He raised an eyebrow. “You accidentally bought two complete lunches?” “Maybe.” “Sophia.” “What?” “You did that on purpose.” She smiled innocently. “I have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about.” Before Ethan could protest further, she handed him one of the bags. The smell of fresh sandwiches instantly filled the air. His stomach growled again. Sophia burst out laughing. “Your stomach just accepted the offer before you did.” Ethan couldn’t help laughing too. “Thank you.” “You’re welcome.” From that day forward, a pattern began to form. Whenever Sophia noticed Ethan skipping meals, she would somehow end up with extra food. Sometimes it was sandwiches. Sometimes pizza. Sometimes coffee and donuts during late-night study sessions. Ethan initially resisted. His pride made accepting help difficult. But Sophia never made him feel pitied. She simply acted as if sharing was the most natural thing in the world. Over time, he stopped arguing. And secretly, he looked forward to their meals together. By the middle of their first semester, their friendship had become one of the strongest on campus. Everyone noticed. You two are basically attached at the hip, one classmate joked. Sophia laughed. Ethan pretended not to hear. But deep down, he knew something was changing. Then Sophia turned toward him. “Ethan?” “Yeah?” “I need to ask you something.” His heart immediately began racing. “What is it?” She hesitated. For the first time since meeting her, Sophia looked nervous. “Have you ever wondered why I spend so much time with you?” Ethan swallowed. “Sometimes.” “And?” “I guess I assumed you enjoyed my company.” A small smile appeared on her face. “I do.” His pulse quickened. Sophia took a deep breath. Then she said the words that would change everything. “I think I’m starting to like you as more than a friend.” For a moment, Ethan thought he had imagined it. The library suddenly felt silent. The world seemed to stop moving. “You do?” Sophia nodded. A nervous laugh escaped her. “Please say something.” Ethan couldn’t stop smiling. “I was literally trying to figure out how to tell you the exact same thing.” Her eyes widened. “Seriously?” “Seriously.” The smile that spread across Sophia’s face was brighter than any California sunrise. Neither of them cared about exams anymore. Neither of them cared about assignments. All that mattered was the fact that they felt the same way. Outside, the rain continued falling.
