Wilder was humbled at best and shocked at worst. Humbled, as Robin asked for his help out of all the people, shocked by the fact that she needed help at all. He has never heard Robin need anything from anyone. She never needed or accepted help, so why was she asking for it? That added with the edge of her voice, made Wilder scared and highly unqualified to help her.
Nonetheless, he listened as Robin told him to break into her room in the Pack House and get everything from the green folder behind her desk. They were to meet in the human city in an hour. “But why?” Wilder asked to which she sighed and replied. “Bring them to the city, I’ll explain everything when I see you. Don’t look at anything until then.” Curious by it all, he agreed even though he knew nothing of breaking a lock and wasn’t very keen on overstepping that much into her territory. Though the deal was over and they had no ties between them, Wilder still felt the weird sensation of doing something he isn’t supposed to do as he inserted a pin into the lock on her door.
He was about to give up and Google ‘how to break a lock’ when whatever he was doing finally worked and he heard the satisfactory ‘click’ of the lock. He walked in and turned on the lights. The room was more colourful than he expected. With that much anger, Wilder expected Robin to live in a dark cave but the room had various colours and artworks pinned around the wall. Focus, Wilder. He scolded himself and looked around her desk for the green folder.
An hour later, Robin parked in front of the only café that worked 24 hours, Wilder’s car was already there. Robin walked in and noticed how there were some people there. She looked around as she progressed until the booth Wilder sat in, they were the only werewolves here. The rest were humans.
“Hey,” Wilder said as Robin slid on the spot across from him. She nodded and shot him a look. “You looked through the files,” Robin said with a shake of her head and chuckle. Wilder nodded with a chuckle as well. “Well, you ask me to break into your room in the middle of the night, retrieve some folder and still expect to not look into it? I am a very curious person.” Robin opened her palm and Wilder handed her the folder. “Any thoughts?” Wilder shrugged. “Well, I got very confused, then I kept reading, saw a funny childhood picture of yours and then there was a bunch on someone called Lucien who had the greenest eyes I have ever seen in my life.”
Despite the situation, Robin laughed. She opened the files and looked through them before sighing. “I have a lot of explaining to do,” Robin said, Wilder lifted his hand to call over the waiter. “No worries, they serve very bad coffee here. We could stay all night.”
Wilder listened as Robin explained the true nature of her stay in the Oak Tails, as Robin offered context for the files, they started making sense and Wilder felt his panic rise. No one buys that many weapons and machinery if they aren’t preparing for war. Then Robin spoke of Lucien and his Alpha Tone. Wilder noted how her demeanour changed when she spoke of him. “Where does he fall on Robin’s list of ‘can I fight this person?’” Wilder asked jokingly, trying to lift the mood. Robin shook her head. “Oh, he falls to a new category called I can fight him, but he will probably use his special abilities to stop even the thought of a fight entering my mind.” Wilder looked at her wide-eyed. “How did you stay there all this time?” Robin looked down. “he came out of nowhere and spoke of getting our home back, told me of his glorious plans. He kept using the Alpha Tone. I only found out that he kept ordering me around last week.” Robin looked panicked, Wilder realized. She wasn’t even panicking when she stood up to a Goddess.
There was silence between them, Wilder looked at his cup and then back at Robin. “So, what do you want to do? Should I call Axel and warn him? Are you coming back with me?” Wilder asked and Robin shook her head. “It’s not all. Lucien, he… he is planning to start a war. River Banes is his first target. And he wants to get Wren to be …. Well the Luna of the Oak Tails, to put it lightly.” Wilder felt his anger rise, that Lucien fella threatened his home and his sister, let alone has the ability to order anything he wants from Robin.
“I am sorry, it’s my fault. He…he asked me about my past and the pack and I talked about everything. He made the fake-professor reach out to Wren because of me. And now he wants me to lead the attack and is very close to using the Alpha tone on me to make me get Wren and If I can’t resist it and he gets to my head-“ Robin was rambling and speaking over herself, her hands were fidgeting on the table. Wilder leaned over and grabbed both of her hands. “Robin,” he spoke slowly, giving her time to focus on him.
“I don’t blame you, I doubt anyone will. I will tell everything to Axel and get him to up the defence of the pack and if you come in and look like you are being possessed by some ancient power, I promise to knock you out with a stick and lock you in a cupboard before you reach Wren.” Wilder said and Robin laughed by the end of it. “Thank you, that really means a lot. If you see me act all power-hungry and wild, just hit that stick a bit harder.” Wilder chuckled.
“What’s that about the power. You keep saying it and I am afraid I am too stupid to understand.” Robin nodded as she started to explain it. “See, the act of having a pureblood line means that the divide between the common wolves and the higher ranked wolves is bigger. Respect is born from fear and fear gives you power over those who feel it. At least that’s what I have been taught.” Wilder looked confused, “That is a rather harsh thing to teach an 8-year-old.” Robin rolled her eyes and continued. “But the thing with power is it's never enough. Once you get a hold of it, you crave more. Lucien initiated all the people into the pack. Binding them to the pack. The pack is bound to the higher ranks and thus he and I have power over them.”
Robin paused and looked down to her hands that were still intertwined with Wilder’s. “I got caught up in it, for a few weeks. That’s why he easily took advantage of me. The pack members, they all would avert their eyes down and try to do everything to be of service to me. Any small mistake and I was on their throat, I could barely recognize myself. But then Derek got on my nerves and it was a small thing really but I…. I fought him.”
Wilder gave her hand a squeeze. “it’s okay,” She shook her head and looked up. “No, it’s not okay, Wilder. One second I was just throwing punches and the next time I look around and my hand is digging into his throat, and Gods he looked so afraid.” Wilder saw the look of regret flash over her face and just wanted to stop any bad emotion from coming her way.
In the last year or so Robin came to his aid way more than necessary, she stopped the fight before Wilder lost, she dragged her out of a bar. She came to his rescue when he got kidn*pped. Wilder realized that it was his turn to offer help now. it was his turn to help Robin. He gave her hand a squeeze. “I know that you wouldn’t willingly do something like that without a good reason. Even then you are just likely to punch them few times. You aren’t whatever he made you think you are.” Robin looked up at Wilder and nodded. “Thanks.” Robin said and let go of Wilder’s hand, she sat back and spoke once again, “you should get going. Give all of the files to Axel and explain it all. There is a book in the library that has more of the Alpha Tone, get it as well.” She scribbled down the name of the book and put it into the green folder as well.
Wilder looked at her in confusion. “Wait, you are going back there?” Robin stopped and nodded. “I can’t leave it, Wilder. That’s Oak Tails…. That’s just my home, I don’t think I can walk away from it.” She could choose to step away and go to River Banes, but she chose to stay in Oak Tails, where people feared her and where she felt power coursing through her veins. “Besides if I go missing it will just make Lucien more determined to attack, maybe even attack sooner. I can’t risk that.” Robin shook her head and Wilder nodded with a sigh.
“Don’t stay there to stall him, if he starts getting out of hand just come back here. I will make sure you always have a place in River Banes, war or not we will always need you.” Robin nodded, “Well let’s hope I don’t come back to River Banes under his influence, though.” They got up and paid the bill of 4 cups of coffee. “What would happen if he manages to break through to you. What will happen if he orders and you can’t fight it away?” He asked with worry. Robin shook her head and looked at Wilder with a similar expression. “I don’t know.”
