Robin felt the chill run down her spine as Oak Tails fighters growled and set their sights on the Alpha family of River Banes. They needed Wren, Lucien has ordered them to get Wren. But Wren was the only one they couldn’t easily spot.
Robin lost no time as she turned to Lucien, as she was about to object to him coming, Derek stepped out from behind Lucien with a smug smile on his face. “Alpha, should I take charge of the mission?” he asked and Robin growled stepped forward. “I think you are forgetting your place, Gamma.” She spoke and Lucien chuckled. “I wouldn’t challenge her, Derek. Get back to your tasks.” He ordered and Robin witnessed how easy it was to control someone with the Alpha tone. Derek went past her and towards the fight. Robin dared to look at the field, her car was still being circled by the fighters but Axel and his other fighters were making their way towards it.
“They are quite determined to not let her go,” Lucien noted, eyes trained on Axel. He was calm and he wasn’t getting ready to attack. He was just here to observe, Robin realized. All he wanted was to secure Wren, there will be many other opportunities to fight the River Banes, he wasn’t rushing to get his hands dirty. “Yes, they ambushed us as soon as I got to fighters,” Robin reported back with a scoff, trying to win the graces of Lucien. She still needed to get the attack plans from him. “I know, the fighters reported to me about them being wary. You should have been the one doing it.” His grip on her shoulder tightened. Robin kept in her growl and nodded. “I should have, but their eyes were on me, I didn’t want to raise the suspicion.” Lucien nodded satisfied with her answer.
Her eyes snapped to the forest as the bullets got fired. Lucien seemed to tense at that as well. Robin looked at the sound and saw River banes fighters firing towards the car. “Wren is in that car,” Robin found herself speaking and jumping forward to reach it but Lucien pulled her behind. “She isn’t, not anymore.” Robin looked around the field but couldn’t find her. Oh, Gods. “Did one of ours get her?” Robin questioned and Lucien nodded and pointed towards the field. Wren was struggling against the 2 of the Oak Tailers that were dragging her here.
Robin was fixed on her spot but she kept glancing towards Axel trying to find a way to make the silent communication of their plan failing. She looked at the struggling Wren and then another bullet was fired, Robin looked in that direction and saw Wilder standing on top of the car, with a shotgun in his hand, he hit the Oak Tails fighter on the back, he howled and dropped down. Lucien growled, “That, mutt.” Wren used this and got free of the other fighter and proceeded to knock him down.
“They need our help,” Robin spoke and looked at the Oak Tails fighters that were passed out on the ground. “All they need is a better motivation,” Lucien said and howled loudly, getting the attention of everyone in the field. “Attack them, get me the girl!” he roared and his fighters replied with a howl of their own. Wren was rushing towards the car with Wilder trailing behind her. Axel and others have taken up guns and were firing away as they retreated towards their cars. “They use human weapons, and still can’t get away.” Lucien chuckled. “We will crush them. Robs.” Robin smirked and nodded. “We will, Alpha.” Though for her this statement was more of a sad one. River Banes was doomed.
Wilder rushed towards his car, following Wren closely, and sometimes turning around to shoot their pursuers. He threw his keys at Wren who tumbled with the door. “Be quick!” Wilder yelled as he saw few figures making their way towards them. Wren started the engine and Wilder closed the door right as someone was about to grab him. “Drive, drive! If you are out of here they will all retreat.” Wilder reminded the initial plan to Wren who was frantically fumbling with the car’s settings.
She pressed on the gas and Wilder jumped towards the back of the car. The back of it was open and Wilder could easily stand there and shoot at the enemy side. He saw one of their soldiers about to be crushed and offered them his arm as they chased the car. Wilder lifted a few of them up and they all started to clear the passage for the car with bullets. Wilder saw one of River Banes soldiers fighting with someone from Oak Tails and upon a closer glance, he recognized the fake-professor. Derek. He aimed his g*n towards him and shot. Derek jumped away, the bullet missed him but offered enough distraction for Wilder to lean down and offer his hand to the River Banes Fighter.
The car was turning as Wilder helped the fighter get on and as he was getting up he felt someone grab at him and drag him down. Wilder turned his head to see Derek dragging him down. The fighters tried to kick Derek off but as the car took another sharp turn leading deep into the forest, it crossed various bumps. This resulted in Wilder losing his balance and falling out of the car and on top of Derek. “Keep driving!” he yelled and kicked Derek before getting up.
Wilder looked around for his g*n but found that it wasn’t with him. Now, he felt less sure of his survival. He run towards the main fight area, deciding to take his chances with finding another g*n or a stronger fighter that will take down Derek who was pursuing him with a growl. Derek grabbed his shoulder, trying to slow Wilder down. Wilder growled and turned around to punch Derek. He dodged it and punched Wilder in the stomach. Alright, not fighting with him. Wilder concluded and pushed Derek away and started running again.
Robin wanted to join the fight, her fists itched to punch someone, she was so angry she could easily knock someone out. There were few things stopping her from getting involved. First was Lucien, who was still gripping her shoulder and engaging in small talk as if they weren’t in the middle of the battlefield. “You have done enough, now, let the fighters take care of the rest.” He reasoned. The second issue was of who exactly would Robin even punch. Her own fighters from Oak Tails or the fighters from River Banes were just acting according to her and Axel’s plan.
“Alpha, she-she drove away. We couldn’t chase her.” One of the fighters reported breathlessly and Lucien growled in anger, he let go of Robin and stepped forward towards the field. “Gather the wounded. We are leaving.” He announced. Leaving. Not retreating. Robin noted as she looked at the battlefield. Axel was retreating with a team of his fighters. Wren was gone with the other half of them. Wait. Where is Wilder? Robin suddenly remembered that he too was in the field. She last saw him before Lucien arrived. He is probably with Wren, they drove away. She tried to reason with herself and followed Lucien towards his car. 4 days. She just needed to be the obeying Beta for 4 days.
Lucien’s chuckle made Robin focus back on reality. He turned towards her with a smile. “Looks like we are not leaving empty-handed after all.” He beckoned her to get closer and Robin obeyed. She saw 2 fighters holding someone by the shoulders, Derek was standing in front of the fighters with a smile and a busted lip. He stepped away and Robin felt her heart drop to her stomach. “Looks like your ex-mate isn’t too keen on letting you go.” Lucien joked as he looked at the barely standing figure of Wilder. Robin looked at him, his hands were bleeding. He tried to fight. He was blinking rapidly, willing his eyes to focus on the situation around him. His eyes kept landing on Robin.
Robin felt someone else’s gaze on her and turned to the field. Axel was standing at the edge of the forest and his eyes were trained on her. She remembered the talk they had in his office. Axel kept looking at her as if to say it was out of his hand now. She would have to keep her walls high. There was no one but her to stop Lucien from taking advantage of their situation. And Robin knew deep in her bones that in the coming days, Lucien will order her to kill Wilder. It would be the ultimate test for her and whether she did it or not will determine everything.
