I wasn’t sure, but I thought I heard a strange bird singing in the room where we slept. Even half-awake, I knew there was no way there was a bird in Elgin’s room. I lifted my head slightly and tried to open my eyes. It was still dark. Elgin was talking on the phone. “What are you saying?”  There was a long silence. “Where is she now?”  A different silence. “Damn it!” he got angry.  I straightened up completely and leaned against the wall. “My roommate? No, he went out. Okay, in ten minutes.”  He hung up. “Elgin?”  He switched on the light and turned to me, his face mixed with anger and concern. “Who were you talking to?”  “Dan. I’m sorry for this wake-up call, Scarlett. Georgia and Minah clashed.”   Elgin jumped to his feet and hastily pulled on his jeans. “They’ll be here i
