Chapter 3: The Storm Approaches

833 Words
The following week at New East High School started off on a sour note for Miki. He had just finished putting his books in his locker when he felt a sharp tug on his backpack. Before he could react, he was yanked backward, causing his glasses to slip down his nose. "Well, well, if it isn't the little tag-along," a mocking voice sneered. Miki turned around to see Steffanie Dobre—known to everyone as Star—flanked by two of her cheerleading minions. Star was everything Miki was not: tall, athletic, and commanding. Her long blonde hair and piercing blue eyes gave her a striking appearance, and her personality only amplified her presence. She was the captain of the cheerleading team and the undisputed queen of New East High. Miki tried to muster his courage. "What do you want, Star?" he asked, attempting to keep his voice steady. Star crossed her arms and gave him a disdainful look. "I want to know what makes you think you can steal Jax's attention," she said, her tone dripping with condescension. "You think just because he feels sorry for you, you can hang out with him?" "I-I'm not stealing anyone's attention," Miki stammered. "Jax is my friend." Star's eyes narrowed. "Listen, Miki. Jax is mine. He doesn't need some chubby little nerd hanging around him. So why don't you do everyone a favor and disappear?" Before Miki could respond, the bell rang, signaling the start of the next class. Star leaned in close, her voice barely above a whisper. "Stay away from Jax. This is your only warning." Miki stood frozen as Star and her entourage strutted away, laughing among themselves. He felt a knot of anxiety form in his stomach. The rest of the day passed in a blur, his thoughts consumed by the confrontation with Star. After school, Miki decided to head to the music room, seeking solace in the one place that always brought him comfort. He sat at the piano and let his fingers dance across the keys, the soothing melody calming his nerves. "Miki?" a voice called out, interrupting his thoughts. He looked up to see Jax standing in the doorway, a concerned expression on his face. "Hey, Jax," Miki said, forcing a smile. "What's up?" "I heard what happened with Star," Jax said, walking over to sit beside Miki on the piano bench. "Are you okay?" Miki sighed, the weight of the day settling on his shoulders. "I'm fine. It's just... she doesn't want us to be friends." Jax frowned. "That's ridiculous. She has no right to tell us who we can or can't be friends with." "I know," Miki replied softly. "But she's popular and powerful. I don't want to cause any trouble." Jax placed a reassuring hand on Miki's shoulder. "You're not causing trouble. Star is the one being unreasonable. I'm not going to let her dictate my friendships." Miki felt a warmth spread through his chest at Jax's words. "Thanks, Jax. That means a lot." "Anytime, Miki," Jax said with a smile. "And remember, you're not alone. We'll face this together." As the days went by, Miki couldn't shake the feeling of unease. Star's threats loomed over him like a dark cloud, but he tried to focus on the positive aspects of his life. Jax's unwavering support and the growing bond between them gave him strength. One afternoon, as Miki was walking to his locker, he noticed a group of students gathered in a circle, laughing and jeering. Curiosity piqued, he approached the crowd, his heart sinking when he saw the target of their ridicule. It was a drawing of him—exaggerated and cruel—pinned to his locker. The caricature depicted him with an overly round body and tiny glasses, holding a sign that read "Loser." Miki's face burned with humiliation. He wanted to disappear, to escape the torment, but before he could turn away, Jax appeared at his side. "Who did this?" Jax demanded, his voice filled with anger. The crowd fell silent, the laughter dying down. No one dared to answer. Jax tore the drawing off the locker and crumpled it in his fist. "This stops now," he said firmly. "Anyone who has a problem with Miki has a problem with me." Star stepped forward, her eyes blazing. "Oh, come on, Jax. It's just a joke. Lighten up." "This isn't a joke, Star," Jax replied coldly. "Bullying is never funny. Leave Miki alone." Star's face twisted with anger and frustration. "Fine," she spat. "But don't think this is over." Jax turned to Miki, his expression softening. "Are you okay?" Miki nodded, though his eyes were filled with unshed tears. "I will be. Thanks, Jax." As Jax walked Miki to their next class, Miki couldn't help but feel a surge of gratitude. Despite the bullying, despite Star's threats, he knew he had found a true friend in Jax. And maybe, just maybe, he could find the courage to face whatever challenges lay ahead.
