I’m running as hard as I can, pushing my legs into the ground to get as much power as possible. It’s no use, the ground seems to be made out of clouds as my feet fall through with every stride. A growl rips through the air reminding me that I am not alone. My breathing gets heavier and I feel like the air is being sucked from around me. My legs won’t work no matter how hard I try. “Help me please!” I cry out but no ones there it’s just me and the beast. I stop running instantly as a pair of amber eyes appear in front of me. “Where are you going mate?” A deep husky voice speaks to me and it takes a moment for me to realize it’s coming from the beast planted in front of me. “Wren” it says my name again and again.
“Wren!” My eyes flash open to immediately close again from the harsh light now that the window shades are open. Sunlight is pooling into the once dark and warm room from before. Lex is standing next to me shaking my arm gently to wake me out of my sleep.
“Ugh why is it so bright?” I groan. Throwing the covers over my face to hide from the light.
Lex giggles at my tantrum, “ I heard you talking and when I came in your room I noticed you must of been having a nightmare. You looked distressed and I wanted to wake you from whatever it was.” She placed her hand on the covers and pulled them back slowly. I looked up at her warm smile greeting me and couldn’t help but smile back at her. “ Thank you Lex I was having an awful dream, I’m sure I will have this one for a long time.” Dread spilled over me as I thought about meeting those eyes every night.
“Do you want to talk about it? Sometimes dreams have hidden meanings and talking it out can help?” Lex sat down on the bed next to me telling me she wasn’t going to give up easily.
I let out a deep sigh and began to situate myself into a more comfortable position. “I keep dreaming about the night in the woods when I was running from these wolves that were chasing me. This one wolf just had it out for me I thought I was going to be his dinner that night. He was huge, beautiful but terrifying, and his eyes were piercing through me. It was so raw and primal like he wasn’t going to stop until I was his.” I looked at her face to gauge how crazy she thinks I am.
“Well, I think that a human running from wolves in a dark forest after being though your physical wounds would have been a very scary situation and I’m sure there is a logical reason for them... I mean the wolves to chase you.” Lex stops for a second trying to calculate what to say next. Her eyes glance around the room and back to me then down at her hands. What is she not telling me? We’ve only know each other for a few hours but I can tell when someone is stalling.
“What is it Lex? What’s wrong? I was just in a wreck and I know my mind is a little fussy but I know they were hunting me down for sport it was intense and...” realization hits me like a train. Oh no the wreck ! My Jeep, my dad! Deja vu all over again. “I need a phone I need to talk to my dad! Oh my gosh I can’t believe I haven’t spoken to him yet! I was so exhausted last time I forgot to stay awake to call him!” I start to tear the covers awI’m running as hard as I can, pushing my legs into the ground to get as much power as possible. I was so exhausted last time I forgot to stay awake to call him!” I start to tear the covers away and get up to find the nearest landline.
“Wren you can’t call him yet, I am so sorry please don’t be angry but in time you will be able to speak with him.” Lex gets up and follows me to the door putting herself in front of it.
“What do you mean I can’t call my dad ? That is insane. What kind of hospital is this?” My voice begins to rise as my heart begins pounding.
“The alpha.. I mean the umm.. the... you just can’t. Please trust me we have taken care of everything. Your dad receives texts from you throughout the day telling him you are safe and healthy.”
My blood begins boiling in my veins as I take in the information she has given me. “So what am I not allowed to leave? You're pretending to be me and answering my family and friends? What kind of twisted crap is that? I trusted you! Let me out Lex now!” I am yelling at her and start to reach for the handle.
Lex grabs my arm firmly but not enough to hurt me. She is stronger than you would think just by looking at her. “Please let’s go sit back down and I will help explain everything I promise.” Her voice cracks and she chokes back tears. Why is she crying? I should be the one crying, I should be flipping the flip out!
“Just get out. GET OUT!” I shove her towards the door. It barely made a difference to her as she didn’t even budge. She turned quickly and left the room in a matter of seconds. Slamming the locked door behind her.
I went back to the bed and sat down hard grabbing my pillow and hugging it tightly against my chest. Her words replaying over and over again in my mind. One word keeps repeating over and over. Alpha.
What’s an alpha?
