Chapter 4: Wake Up Call

1367 Words
Wren POV Beep. Beep. Beep. Ugh what is that annoying sound. Beep. Beep. Beep. Seriously? What in the world.... Oh no... the woods, the wolves, the wreck. It all comes rushing back in a wave of panic crashing down over me. The beeping seems to become more rapid as a start to try and move my limbs. “Aaaahhh” I grown out as I try to move my legs around. I feel soft satin sheets wrapped around them. I must of died and this is heaven and I’m sleeping on a cloud. Or at least that’s how the bed beneath me feels. I pry my eyes open and start to blink to clear my blurry vision into focus. I start to take in my surroundings and it doesn’t look like I am in a hospital room. It looks like I am in a bedroom, a huge one at that. The walls are matte dark charcoal gray, the furniture is a dark wood and matches the dark wood floors. The bed is a four poster with white drapes that match the fluffy comforter. The lights are dimmed and give a warm glow to the room. Which is actually nice versus the harsh fluorescent lighting hospitals usually have. Looking over to the left I see hospital monitors and wires hooked up to my arms and chest. I grab the wires that seem to be my heart monitor and peel them off. I have an IV in my hand but I decide to leave the fluids in. Also I hate needles so I am not about to pull it out myself. I use my hands to explore my body remembering I was bleeding from my head wound I feel bandages wrapped around my head I probably had to have stitches like I thought. My arms have bandages where I fell on the glass from the wreck. I need to get to a phone to call my dad. My phone was in my car but I didn’t grab it before running into the woods. A flash of amber eyes came into my mind from my memories. How did I survive the wolves ? Someone must of found me or a true miracle happened. “Hello?” I called out not to loud since it seemed so quiet other than the beeping machines. I waited a few seconds and decided to try to walk to the door. Painfully I dragged my legs to the side of the bed and grabbed the IV pole that I was grateful had wheels. I used it to steady myself and stand. Okay not to bad now I just need to step. Pain radiates through my body and I try to use my muscles that I had recently pushed to the breaking point. I gritted my teeth and took deep breaths as I made my way to the door. Turning the handle and it stopped. Wait that can’t be right why would they lock patients inside their rooms? That has to be against some sort of safety code. I turn the handle again to be met with the same result. “Ummm hello? Can anyone hear me?” I hit the door with my fist. I feel tears burning the corners of my eyes and a lump in my throat as I fight back having a break down. I need someone to hear me. “PLEASE SOMEONE OPEN THE DOOR PLEASE!” Losing it I begin sobbing all of the stress and emotions from the events before flooding into my mind. I loose my grip on the pole and crumble to the floor wrapping my arms around my knees as I curled into a ball weeping into the dark wood floor. The door flung open as light flooded into the room. A dark massive silhouette made its way towards me. I closed my eyes tightly and covered my face with my hands. Warm hands began to slip under me picking me up and cradling me against a broad and muscular chest. The warmth radiating from this nurse was comforting. I had no idea how cold I was until I was met with this heat source. Without thinking I laid my head against their shoulder and began relaxing into the body that was carrying me with little effort. The cologne he is wearing is amazing. I have never smelt something so intoxicating and I am obsessed with scents and candles. I take a deep breath inhaling deeply trying to place the ingredients. I keep my eyes closed and my hands up as a shield between myself and this mystery hulk of a nurse who must work out three times a day. I try to steady my breath and try to stop the flood gates so that I can speak to him. He begins to lay me down on the bed again and suddenly the warmth is gone and the door is closed once again. Well that was rude to leave a patient in this state without a single word. As I began to start my journey to the door again to give him a piece of my mind the door slowly began to open. I sat up and wiped away the left over tears and straightened up the covers around me. A beautiful woman appeared through the doorway with a warm smile and kind caramel eyes. She was young and slender, her skin looked sun kissed and her blonde hair was lightly framed around her heart shaped face. “Hello how are you feeling Wren? I’m Alexis but most people call me Lex. You sure had us worried for a few days. We didn’t think you were going to wake up so soon.” “I’m as well as can be expected I guess. I’m tired, in pain, confused. It’s nice to meet you Alexis... I mean Lex.” I gave her a smile and extended my hand to give her a proper greeting. She moved toward me swiftly and gently took my hand in hers. I felt the warmth again from her as I did the male nurse from earlier. Am I really that freezing? I must be turning into an icicle. She released me and help up a clipboard and began looking over it carefully. “Well I think we can get these machines out of here and remove your IV . Your vitals are showing promising results.” She gives me a reassuring smile and begins taking the needle out of my hand and rolling up the wires and tubes. She rolls them to the door and knocks lightly. The door opens slightly and another young woman steps in and takes the machines and leaves the room. Lex turns and walks toward the foot of the bed. “Is there anything I can get for you Wren?”, her eyes watch me intensely as she studies my body language and face for any sign of alarm. “Can I get a phone to call my dad? I’m sure he is sending the Calvary to find me by now.” The thought of my dad and sister send a ping to my heart. I can’t imagine how they are feeling or thinking. “Let me go get you a bite to eat and some water. I will make sure your family is made aware of the situation. Here this is a remote you can use to call for any assistance you need.” Lex hands me a small black remote with two buttons. It has two buttons, a blue phone and a red alarm bell. I can figure out the difference between assistance and an emergency. “Thank you”, I smile at her genuinely. Lex gently grabs my foot and gives it a light squeeze and gives me a smile. She turns to the door and quickly shuffled out of the room. I laid back against the pillows and stare up to the ceiling. What am I going to do now? My car is totaled and I’m hundreds of miles from home. As my mind races with questions I slowly close my eyes and drift off. Then a final question crosses my mind.. How did she know my name?
