Chapter 2

Lexi's mind was racing as she walked back to her cottage. What had she just gotten herself into? And what secrets was Ethan hiding? As she opened the door to her cottage, she was greeted by her best friend and confidant, Rachel. "Hey, girl! How was your day?" Rachel asked, eyeing Lexi's frazzled expression. Lexi collapsed onto the couch, spilling everything that had happened with Ethan and Victor. Rachel's eyes widened as she listened. "Lexi, you have to be careful. These people sound dangerous." Lexi nodded, feeling a shiver run down her spine. "I know. But I have to know what's going on. I have to uncover the truth." Rachel handed Lexi a cup of steaming coffee. "Well, let's start digging then. See what we can find out about Ethan Black and Victor Vex." As they sat down at Lexi's computer, Lexi's phone buzzed with a text from an unknown number. "Meet me at the old oak tree in the town square at midnight. Come alone." Lexi's heart skipped a beat. Who was this? And what did they want? Lexi's eyes locked onto Rachel's, her mind racing with possibilities. "What do I do?" she whispered. Rachel's expression was grim. "I don't think you should go. It sounds like a trap." But Lexi's curiosity got the better of her. She had to know who was behind the mysterious text and what they wanted. At midnight, Lexi made her way to the old oak tree in the town square, her heart pounding in her chest. As she approached the tree, a figure emerged from the shadows. It was Ethan. "I knew you'd come," he said, his eyes gleaming in the moonlight. Lexi's mind was reeling. What was Ethan's game? And why had he summoned her here? "What do you want, Ethan?" she demanded, trying to keep her voice steady. Ethan stepped closer, his voice low and urgent. "I want to tell you the truth, Lexi. About everything." And with that, he began to unravel a web of secrets and lies that would change Lexi's life forever. Ethan's eyes locked onto Lexi's, his gaze intense. "I'm not who you think I am, Lexi," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. "My name is Ethan Black, but my family's name is synonymous with wealth and power. We're one of the richest families in the world." Lexi's eyes widened as Ethan continued. "My great-grandfather built the Black fortune from scratch, amassing a vast empire of real estate, tech, and finance. But with great wealth comes great danger. There are those who would stop at nothing to get their hands on our fortune." Ethan paused, his jaw clenched. "I've been forced to take measures to protect myself, to protect the family business. That's why I'm here in Willow Creek, to lay low and keep a low profile." Lexi's mind was reeling. She had no idea Ethan was from such a wealthy family. No wonder Victor Vex was so eager to do business with him. "But why the wedding?" Lexi asked, her curiosity getting the better of her. Ethan's expression turned grim. "The wedding is a business arrangement, Lexi. A merger of sorts. My family's company is in trouble, and I need to secure a deal with a rival family to save it. The wedding is just a facade, a way to solidify the alliance." Lexi felt a pang of disappointment. She had hoped the wedding was more than just a business deal. "But there's more," Ethan said, his eyes clouding over. "There are those who don't want the merger to happen. They'll stop at nothing to sabotage it, even if it means harming innocent people." Lexi's heart skipped a beat. "Who are they?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Ethan hesitated, as if unsure how much to reveal. "Let's just say they're a rival family, one that's been trying to take down my family for years. They're ruthless, Lexi. And they'll do whatever it takes to get what they want." Lexi felt a chill run down her spine. She had stumbled into something much bigger than she had ever imagined. "Why are you telling me this?" she asked, her eyes locked onto Ethan's. Ethan's gaze softened, and for a moment, Lexi saw a glimmer of vulnerability. "Because I trust you, Lexi. And I need your help. I need someone I can rely on, someone who can help me uncover the truth and keep me safe." Lexi's heart fluttered at his words. No one had ever looked at her like that before, like she was the only person who mattered.
