The mansion was suffocating and quiet. I couldn’t breathe and all I wanted to do was get out.
It wasn’t the kind of quiet that soothed; it was the kind that pressed down on you until every breath felt stolen. My room, though large and warm, felt like a cage. Four walls and a ceiling holding me in while my thoughts clawed and screamed for escape.
Kevin’s face haunted me. The way his voice had cracked when I told him the truth. The disbelief. The heartbreak.
