On Saturday afternoon I finally answered Malaki’s repeated texts in annoyance to tell her I would get a hold of her later that night. As much as I kept trying to act like our mission was no big deal, I knew it could still go wrong. I wanted to soak up the good times with my family in case they were the last ones I had.
